Dispersable tablets

Although untreated starches do not swell sufficiently, certain modified forms, such as sodium starch glycolate, do swell in cold water and are better as disintegrants. Various cellulose derivatives, including methylcellulose and carboxymethylcellulose, have been used in this role, but with limited success due to the marked increase in viscosity they produce around the dispersing tablet mass. 

A challenge faced by formulators designing dispersible tablets is the ability to develop a formulation that rapidly disintegrates and is able to withstand shipping processes. In addition, this type of tablet should form a uniform and somewhat stable suspension when dispersed in water. An interesting answer to... 

The development of new dosage forms such as rapidly dispersible tablets are discussed in some detail. 

Losec MUPS is a proprietary preparation of omeprazole available as dispersible tablets that can be dispersed either in water or fruit juice. Tablets should not be chewed. 

Diclofenac is available as dispersible tablets, tablets, gel, suppositories and for intravenous or intramuscular injection. The maximum dose of diclofenac administered via any route is 150 mg. As v/ith other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, concomitant use in patients receiving venlafaxine increases the risk of bleeding. 

Methadone, used as an analgesic, may be dispensed in any licensed pharmacy. Methadone dispersible tablets are for oral administration only. This preparation contains insoluble excipients and therefore must not be injected. It is recommended that methadone dispersible tablets, if dispensed, be packaged in child-resistant containers and kept out of the reach of children to prevent accidental ingestion. 

Pain/Detoxification - For relief of severe pain detoxification and temporary maintenance treatment of narcotic addiction (except dispersible tablets and certain oral concentrates see product table). 

Administration ofchewable dispersible tablets Swallow lamotrigine chewable dispersible tablets whole, chewed, or dispersed in water or diluted fruit juice. If chewed, consume a small amount of water or diluted fruit juice to aid in swallowing. To disperse chewable dispersible tablets, add the tablets to a small amount of liquid (5 ml or enough to cover the medication). Approximately 1 minute later, when the tablets are completely dispersed, swirl the solution and consume the entire quantity immediately. Do not attempt to administer partial quantities of the dispersed tablets. 

Absorption/Distribution - Lamotrigine is rapidly and completely absorbed after oral administration. Absolute bioavailability is 98%. Peak plasma concentrations occur anywhere from 1.4 to 4.8 hours following drug administration. Lamotrigine chewable/dispersible tablets were found to be equivalent, whether they were administered as dispersed in water, chewed and swallowed, or swallowed as whole, to lamotrigine compressed tablets in terms of rate and extent of absorption. 

Chewable/Dispersible buffered tablets To provide adequate buffering, thoroughly chew at least 2 of the appropriate strength tablets, but no more than 4 tablets, or disperse in at least 1 ounce of water prior to consumption. To disperse tablets, add 2 tablets to at least 1 ounce of water. Stir until a uniform dispersion forms, and drink entire dispersion immediately. If additional flavoring is desired, the dispersion may be diluted with 1 ounce of clear apple juice. Stir the further diluted dispersion just prior to consumption. The dispersion with clear apple juice is stable at room temperature for up to 1 hour.

Initial treatment of cold sores is usually by the application of topically applied creams, such as Zovirax. More severe cases are treated with oral products, such as conventional or dispersible tablets. In very severe cases treatment may be via intravenous infusion.

The material shall consist of a homogeneous mixture of technical deltamethrin together with carriers and any other suitable for-mulants. It shall be in the form of tablets or pills that disintegrate, disperse and wet out readily on stirring into water. The technical deltamethrin used in the manufacture of the water-dispersible tablets shall comply with the requirements of specification WHO/SIT/24.R1 ( ) ... 

Not less than 98% of the water-dispersible tablet shall pass through a 75-pm sieve after disintegration in water when tested by CIPAC method MT 59.3 (2). 

The water-dispersible tablet, after treatment as described in CIPAC method MT 46.1 (2), shall comply with the requirements of sections 1.2.1-1.2.5,1.2.7 and 1.2.8 of this specification. 

Each deltamethrin water-dispersible tablet shall be individually sealed in foil before placement in an outer pack. 

Note The method used to determine the deltamethrin content differs slightly from the method described in the current WHO specification for deltamethrin technical and deltamethrin formulations (WP, EC, DP, UL, SC) in order to accommodate the extraction of deltamethrin active ingredient from the water-dispersible tablet. 

Deltamethrin is extracted from the water-dispersible tablet sample with a mixture of dioxane and water. The suspension is further diluted five times with iso-octane and filtered. The deltamethrin content is determined by comparing the response of the sample with that of a deltamethrin standard by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), using a Nucleosil column (or equivalent) and a mixture of dioxane and iso-octane as the mobile phase. 

A suspension of known concentration of deltamethrin in standard hard water is prepared by adding an entire water-dispersible tablet to standard hard water, poured into a 250-ml graduated cylinder, maintained at a constant temperature, and allowed to remain undisturbed for 30 minutes. The top nine-tenths are drawn off and the content of deltamethrin in the bottom one-tenth is determined, so allowing determination of the active ingredient mass still in suspension after 30 minutes.
