Biophysical analysis of biomolecules like proteins, nucleic acids, or lipids utilizes intrinsic physical properties of the observed molecule itself or of an associated reporter molecule, which reflect information about structural characteristics, interactions, or reactions of the subject observed. In most cases the analysis (and the labels introduced) only interferes slightly with the interaction of interest and does not induce significant changes in the properties of the reactants.

GH administered to hypophysectomized rats in vivo causes a drop in the level of plasma non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), followed by a prolonged increase in this level [89]. This appears to be due to increased utilization of lipids - increased uptake of NEFA by muscle preceding increased output by adipose tissue. As a consequence GH diverts the energy metabolism of the organism from carbohydrate utilization to lipid utilization, and acts to oppose the effects of insulin. Actions of GH on lipid metabolism are particularly marked in man, where GH levels become elevated on fasting and presumably serve to help stimulate the increased lipid utilization seen in this condition. In contrast, in the rat, GH levels fall on fasting.

As the development of lipidomics field, mass spectrometric analysis of plant lipids has been advanced accordingly. The branch of lipidomics in analysis of plant cellular lipids utilizing mass spectrometry was specifically called plant lipidomics [1], As described early in the book (Chapter 3), all kinds of MS-based lipidomics approaches, particularly those based on ESl-MS or ESI-MS/MS, could be used in plant lipidomics. The advantages of ESl-MS-based methods over traditional lipid analytical approaches for analysis of plant lipids were extensively discussed [1-3]. 

Several authors have reported a decreased respiratory quotient (RQ) with carnitine supplementation, suggesting that carnitine influences substrate utilization. In support of this hypothesis, both Gorostiaga et al. and Muller et al. reported an increase in lipid utilization, therefore sparing carbohydrates and prolonging exercise time. 

In compensation for this abnormal situation, fat is preferentially used as a sole energy source in the body. The metabolic shift to lipid utilization leads to hypertriglyceridemia accompanied by elevation of free fatty acid in blood and, in very advanced stages by elevation of ketone bodies including acetoacetate and 3-hydroxy-butyrate in blood. Increased level of CoA and acyl CoA in the diabetic rat liver was reported by Smith et al. [1]. This seems to be a metabolic response to increased utilization of fatty acid in diabetic state and suggests increased requirement for CoA in diabetic tissues. It is, therefore, interesting to study the effect of some precursors of CoA on diabetic hyperlipidemia.
