There is a surprisingly wide range of LIMS vendors on the market. Some have global presence, while others are in one country or a small region. Some provide a flexible system other systems are more rigid. Some are specialized for animal, forensic, or clinical testing with information on the patient others are specialized for batch production or continuous production, or maybe both. Yet others are ideally suited for Research and Development activities, which is traditionally hard to automate and manage. [Pg.2164]

In larger LIMS projects the LIMS (and project) manager would need assistance in the form of a project team. In this team staff members of the laboratory, of the internal EDP department, and, perhaps, of external consultants or LIMS vendors would work together. Often a problem is that specialists do not speak the same language . For example, a special word (e.g., parameter) might be understood differently by a chemist and an EDP expert. The team should therefore create a list of terms which are used in discussions and documents and define them. Ever since computers became of a practical size to fit in a spectroscopy laboratory, they have had an ever more intimate relationship with the spectrometers themselves. The hardware and software used to implement LIMS systems must be vahdated. Computers and networks need to be examined for potential impact of component failure on LIMS data. Security concerns regarding control of access to LIMS information must be addressed. Software, operating systems, and database management systems used in the implementation of LIMS systems must be vahdated to protect against data cormption and loss. Mechanisms for fault-tolerant operation and LIMS data backup and restoration should be documented and tested. One approach to vahdation of LIMS hardware and software is to choose vendors whose products are precertified however, the ultimate responsibihty for vahdation remains with the user. Vahdating the LIMS system s operation involves a substantial amount of work, and an adequate vahdation infrastmcture is a prerequisite for the constmction of a dependable and flexible LIMS system. [Pg.518]

Before deciding on a LIMS product, a complete set of specifications for required functions of the LIMS should be written. The best time to do this is before any vendors have been contacted. Inviting vendors to participate in this process results in a specification which can be automatically fiilfilled by their product. These tools allow end users to add new screens, menus, functions, and reports in a rapid and intuitive manner. Describe what your needs and visions are, and not what anybody else, including the vendor, thinks they are. For example, your vision is that instruments shall be connected to the system so that information xxx can be directly sent to the LIMS for further calculations. Or that the instrument shall perform all calculations on its own, and send the calculated result to LIMS. [Pg.2168]

Several books about LIMS are available. Even if they are relatively old, there are many useful information in them. Querying for LIMS on internet search engines will give many hits, from vendors, consultants, users, specific LIMS sites, and conferences or meetings. [Pg.2170]
