Evolved programs

The domain of living organisms is unified by the commonality of cells and in terms of mutual energy dependence. Living organisms are open systems that create order at the expense of disorder in the environment. Life can be defined by a series of characteristics, including evolved programs and chemical properties. 

DNA is the master substance of the cell, the chemical embodiment of the evolved program of life it is the stuff of genes, the units of inheritance. DNA is composed of a complementary double helix of nucleotides, the building blocks. 

The use above of the somewhat controversial terms of teleology goes back to Mayr s essay collection [10], where, slightly simplified, teleomatic processes are governed by natural laws and teleonomic ones are goal-directed due to the influence of an evolved program. 

No matter what the effect of the genetic operators may be, the evolving programs have a tendency to grow indefinitely unless limits are placed on their size. These limits exist to reduce the quantity of redundant code (known as junk), which otherwise quickly become excessive. 

Cells need oxygen, water, and food for life. These are first supplied, via the placenta, by the mother. The subsequent, highly complicated evolving program is devoted to ensuring independence from the mother. 

As an evolving program is continuously changed, its complexity, reflecting deteriorating structure, increases unless work is done to maintain it or reduce it.

Since the first photovoltaic (PV) cells were fabricated for the U.S. space program in 1958, PV technology has evolved from once being a very high cost but essential and effective space power source to later becoming a small but diversified and enduring worldwide industry (1 6). Led by firms based in the United States, Japan, and Germany, this industry serves multiple markets (see Photovoltaic cells). 

Digital control methodologies similar to the Elliott Digital System program evolved from successful and proven reliable high-speed air compressor management and control approaches. 

New regulatory initiatives (e.g., from OSHA and EPA) and industry programs (e.g., the Chemical Manufacturers Association s Responsible Cate effort) have stimulated increased attention to PSM. While compliance is certainly a requirement in deciding to implement PSM, it is by no means the only ben t. Rather, compliance is the baseline from which other benefits evolve. The quality and effectiveness of the system your company ultimately adopts could well depend on how persuasively those benefits are conveyed. Remember, at this point in your initiative, the goal is to win endorsement of a concept, not approval of a full-fledged plan. The core of that concept is the idea that PSM offers benefits over and above compliance with new regulations, or conformance with an industry initiative. 

Using model programs offers the advantage of efficiency. Installation can be accomplished relatively quickly, often with minimal investment of staff time. Since model programs evolve from the experience of others, many of their kinks have already been worked out, which can facilitate implementation. 

Will all issues be covered by the new processes Most PSM and ESH programs evolved over a large number of years. Gaps were found and plugged. There is a natural concern that designing new processes will result in gaps that may expose the company to potential liabilities. 

As computer programs evolve they become easier to use. Modem programs often communicate with the user in terms of a graphical interface, and many methods have become essential black box procedures if you can draw the molecule, you can also do the calculation. This effectively means that you no longer have to be a highly trained theoretician to run even quite sophisticated calculations.

Table 23.7 outlines briefly the extent of operations which need to be undertaken. This is intended only as a guide, as in the majority of installations a program will be evolved to suit individual cases. In certain instances (for example, where electrical power generation is involved) the boilers may not shut down on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, and all controls are then fully automated. Also, watertube boilers may operate for longer periods before fireside shutdown is necessary.
