Lectures and meetings

Many authoritative accounts of both general and specific aspects of the reactions of solids and related topics appear as plenary lectures and research papers in the series of International Symposia on the Reactivity of Solids [82—86]. The material presented at these meetings reflects contemporary interests in a diverse and developing field, so that changes in emphasis are to be discerned in the content of the successive symposia held at four-yearly intervals. Reference can also be made here to the conference on Reaction Kinetics in Heterogeneous Chemical Systems in which useful review material is found [87],... 

Class meetings are three times weekly, two hours of lecture and one hour for group discussion. Text material includes a basic reference. World Resources 1990-91 (World Resources Institute, Oxford University Press, 1990), and supplemental references provided from time to time, including available GCI modular materials, articles from recent periodicals, and news items from the daily press.

Since his retirement in 1980, Aaron Ihde has continued to remain active as a scholar and as a teacher. He continues to participate in various courses at Wisconsin as a guest lecturer and to deliver lectures and papers at various institutions and meetings around the country. He remained as major professor to several graduate students who had not yet completed their doctoral dissertations at the time of his retirement. A book-length history of the Chemistry Department at Wisconsin, on which he has been working for the past few years, is now nearing completion.

He liked to travel, and he undertook numerous lecture and scientific meeting tours to several American and European countries, and also to the USSR, Japan, and Australia. 

At Minnesota we cover these topics in approximately 30 lectures and 20 recitations. This requires two to four lectures per chapter to complete all chapters. Obviously some of the material must be omitted or skimmed to meet this schedule. We assume that most instructors will not cover all the industrial or historical examples but leave them for students to read. 

You have a meeting. They talk about,, . everything that is wrong with you,, , They give you lectures about how you can do better and stuff like that, I had so many of those lectures and speeches it is not even funny,, , They tell you the same speeches over and over and over [and] you get sick of hearing it after a while. They try to embed it in your head. It gets on your nerves hearing the same speech ovet and ovet and over. 

With rapid advances in carbohydrate chemistry, the interest in carbohydrate meetings has increased and biennial meetings appeared to be insufficient to meet the demand. A new series of meetings, restricted to Europe, started in Vienna in 1981 under the name of Eurocarb, was followed by one in Budapest in 1983. These meetings take place biennially in those years in which there is no International Carbohydrate Symposium in 2007 the location is Lubeck (Germany). They are modeled on the International Symposia and are controlled by the European Carbohydrate Organization, representing countries in Europe in which carbohydrate research is carried out. The participants are not exclusively European, for example, in Lisbon (2001) 21% of the plenary lecturers, 11% of the invited lecturers, and 24% of the session chairmen came from countries outside Europe. 

As in the first meeting it was possible to invite well-known scientists from Germany and abroad to give lectures. In addition, there was again a remarkable poster session. The scientific yield was once more so rich that the organizers felt obliged to collect the lectures and poster contributions in a second volume of Organosilicon Chemistry - From Molecules to Materials . 

This volume includes the papers of Keynote Lectures and Invited Contributions presented at the First International Workshop on DV-Xa Method (DV-Xa 96, with Special Emphasis on Inner-Shell Physics and Chemistry). The Workshop was organized by the Society for Discrete Variational Xa (Japan), the Institute of Nuclear Research of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (ATOMKI), and the Department of Theoretical Physics of the L. Kossuth University of Debrecen, following numerous annual meetings on this topic in Japan. 

The Fifth International Symposium on the Characterisation of Porous Solids (COPS-V) was held at Heidelberg, Germany, from May 30 to June 2, 1999. Heidelberg showed its best side with beautiful summer weather, friendly atmosphere and superb hospitality. About 220 participants from 25 countries enjoyed a very successful meeting with 32 lectures and 155 poster presentations. 

Even if you are so convinced of the rightness of your position that a burning bush couldn t change your mind, try not to sound smug about it. No one likes to be lectured by someone perched atop the mountain of morality. Instead of preaching, adopt a tone that says, I believe my position is correct, and I am glad to have this opportunity to explain why. Then give your reasons and meet objections in a positive but not holier-than-thou manner. 

This volume includes the papers presented at the first Japanese-Korean DV-Xa Joint Symposium (DV-Xa 98). The 11 th annual meeting of the Society for Discrete Variational Xa (Japan) was held at the Hoam Convention Center of Seoul University, Seoul, Korea, August 2-4, 1998. The symposium was organized by the Society for Discrete Variational Xa, Seoul National University, and Kunsan National Unversity. More than 80 scientists participated and discussed topics. The scientific program contained more than 50 papers, including three keynote lectures and five invited lectures, on the topics of theoretical research, especially research on materials science and X-ray and electron spectroscopies. 

Periodic attendance at professional meetings, lectures, and symposia on broad issues that affect the profession... 

Attend class meetings, take notes, and participate in class discussions. You will get much more out of a lecture, discussion section, or laboratory—and will enjoy it more—if you are actively involved. Don t hesitate to ask questions or make comments when the lecture confuses you. If you have read the chapter before coming to class and paid attention to the lecture and you still have a question, you can be fairly certain that other students have that question too and will appreciate your asking for clarification.
