Keynote lectures

ROBUST AND UNBIASED ESTIMATIONS IN CHEMICAL DATA TREATMENT

As usually the statistical properties of the experimental data are poorly known, nobody can guarantee that the standard statistical procedures give the tmstworthy results. The history of chemical data treatment exemplifies impressively the persistent stmggle for obtaining more and more reliable meaningful information from the experimental data. 

The report is concentrated at a few procedures of data treatment that allow overcoming some drawbacks of standard statistical procedures. The main attention is paid to the problems of the regression analysis, especially to the Quantitative Stmcture-Activity Relationships (QSAR). 

The first task considered is the robust estimation of fitting parameters. Following to Peter Huber, the consideration is built at the assumption that the density function of the experimental random errors (8) can be presented in the following form

This volume includes the papers of Keynote Lectures and Invited Contributions presented at the First International Workshop on DV-Xa Method (DV-Xa 96, with Special Emphasis on Inner-Shell Physics and Chemistry). The Workshop was organized by the Society for Discrete Variational Xa (Japan), the Institute of Nuclear Research of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (ATOMKI), and the Department of Theoretical Physics of the L. Kossuth University of Debrecen, following numerous annual meetings on this topic in Japan. 

DV-Xa 96 took place in the ATOMKI, Debrecen, Hungary, on 2-3 September 1996, ensuring a quiet place, good conditions, and a stimulating atmosphere for the lectures and discussions. The 40 invited participants (half of the attendance from Japan) represented six countries, and the scientific program involved 10 Keynote Lectures reviewing central issues in the development and application of the DV-Xa method, as well as 17 Invited Contributions focusing on the latest results. 

Another powerful technique is scanning probe microscopy (SPM) such as STM and AFM. This subject was well reviewed in the keynote lecture given by Tascon et al. [27]... 

The Sixth International Symposium on the Characterization of Porous Solids (COPS-VI) was held at Alicante, Spain, on May 8-11, 2002 with about 220 participants from 29 countries. There were three Keynote lectures, 29 lectures and 154 poster presentations, with several sessions devoted to general discussion. The intensive three-day programme provided a stimulating forum for the exchange of information on novel research findings, concepts, techniques and materials.

This volume includes the papers presented at the first Japanese-Korean DV-Xa Joint Symposium (DV-Xa 98). The 11 th annual meeting of the Society for Discrete Variational Xa (Japan) was held at the Hoam Convention Center of Seoul University, Seoul, Korea, August 2-4, 1998. The symposium was organized by the Society for Discrete Variational Xa, Seoul National University, and Kunsan National Unversity. More than 80 scientists participated and discussed topics. The scientific program contained more than 50 papers, including three keynote lectures and five invited lectures, on the topics of theoretical research, especially research on materials science and X-ray and electron spectroscopies.
