Growth Characteristics. As a fibrous product from living trees, wood is subjected to many environmental influences as it is formed and during its lifetime. These environmental influences can increase the variability of the wood material and, thus, increase the variability of the mechanical properties. To reduce the effect of this inherent variability, standardized testing procedures using small, clear specimens of wood are often used. Small, clear specimens do not have knots, checks, splits, or reaction wood. However, the wood products used and of economic importance in the real world have these defects. Strength estimates derived from small clear specimens are reported because most chemical treatment data have been generated from small clear specimens. [Pg.215]

Two types of wood samples (namely Guilan spruce and pine) were selected for drying investigation. Natural defects such as knots, checks, splits, etc which would reduce strength of wood are avoided. All wood samples were dried to a moisture content of approximately 30%. The thermal conductivity of wood is affected by a number of basic factors density, moisture content, extractive content, grain direction, structural irregularities such as checks and knots, fibril angle, and temperature. Thermal conductivity increases as density, moisture content, temperature, or extractive content of the wood increases. The FRP components may be subjected to considerably high temperatures, and it is essential to check the behavior of the threads at such temperatures, as well as in the resin. At the area of the stitch knot, a high amount of sewing thread is involved, so the thermal analysis of these small areas helps to check the actual thermal behavior of the thread inside the FRP laminate.
