Shortly after the appearance of the gas casualty chest in 1S 42, a small gas casualty first-aid kit, evolved from the earlier plant kit, was standardized and issued on the basis of one to each twenty-five individuals and as an accessory of vehicular equipment. Another approach is to use kit formulations also for this kind of product. Two types of kits are discussed in this section, sample collection kits and field test kits. Sample collection kits will generally contain all sample containers, materials, supplies, and forms necessary to perform sample collection activities. Field test kits contain the equipment and supplies necessary to perform field safety screening and rapid field testing of the air, water, and/or soil. Sample collection kits will generally be less expensive to construct than field test kits. Sample collection kits can be pre-positioned throughout a system, while the more expensive field kits may be assigned to specific site characterization teams or personnel. 

Polyclonal antibodies of different types are known to show affinity for specific compounds. Thus, antibodies that can bind to a specific substance to be analyzed are immobilized to the walls of the test tubes, plates, or microwells. Such test tubes and plates are commercially available and supplied in the test kit. A measured amount (between 10 and 50 pL) of sample or sample extract is added to one such test tube containing an assay diluent (a phosphate buffer). An equal volume of analyte-enzyme conjugate (commercially available and supplied in the kit) is then added to the test tube. The enzyme conjugate is a solution containing the same analytes covalently bound to an enzyme. The solution mixture is incubated or allowed to stand for a specific amount of time. During this period, the enzyme conjugate competes with the analyte molecules for a limited number of antibody binding sites in the test tube. 

Obtain field screening kits and all necessary supplies and verify that the quantity of supplies is sufficient for the project task.

It is essential that test-kits are used for the intended purpose in a specific matrix. Thus test-kits can limit the applications in which the technology can be applied. In some cases, it will be necessary to set up an in-house assay format for which it will be necessary to buy the separate individual immunoreagents, such as antibodies, enzyme-tracer or analyte-derivative protein conjugates. Test-Mate Assay In addition to the laboratory-based methodologies, a field deployable unit is commercially available, the Test-mate ChE system (EQM Research Inc., Cincinnati, OH). This method is also based on the Ellman procedure and is supplied as a kit containing reagents to separately measure erythrocyte AChE and plasma-BChE with a battery-operated, photometric analyzer (Taylor et al., 2003). A specific serum BChE inhibitor (As 1397, or 10-(oi-diethylaminopropionyl)-phenothia-zone) is included in the kit and is required to measure AChE (after a period of incubation). Two capillary...

Where do kits stem from It could be assumed that kits always supply a need identified by careful assessment of existing problems and the current solutions, and thus that there is a direct route from need to development to end product. This is not generally true. Rarely is there such a clean scenario. Rather, some developments in research are harnessed to prove feasibility of an approach, which then leads to a relatively moderate amount of validation followed by exploitation. Who exploits the reagents and in what form usually determines... 

Reagents and Materials. Deionized water was obtained from a Millipore Milli-Q water purification system. Triazine standards were received from the U.S. EPA Pesticides and Industrial Chemicals Repository, Research Triangle Park, NC 27711. Immunoassay kits were supplied by ImmunoSysterns, Inc., 4 Washington St., Scarborough, ME 04074. 

Another way to best utilize the volunteers is to have dedicated space and equipment for use in preparing for and doing the demos. We bought sturdy plastic boxes for "kits" and have a part of a room with the demonstration materials in it, with space for preparing solutions and clean up of the kits when they come back. Thus anyone involved in the project knows where to find what they need, and they can stop in if they have only a few minutes to help or pick up extra supplies quickly on their way out. 

First aid supplies are required to be readily available under paragraph Sec. 1910.151(b). An example of the minimal contents of a generic first aid kit is described in American National Standard (ANSI) Z308.1-1978 Minimum Requirements for Industrial Unit-Type First-aid Kits. The contents of the kit listed in the ANSI standard should be adequate for small worksites. When larger operations or multiple operations are being conducted at the same location, employers should determine the need for additional first aid kits at the worksite, additional types of first aid equipment and supplies and additional quantities and types of supplies and equipment in the first aid kits.
