WitUn, Gordon. Should You Own a Gun U.S. News World Report, vol. 117, August 15, 1994, pp. 24ff. Uses the question of gun ownership to introduce the overall debate about gun control. The article features a debate between Gary Kleck, whose research shows that gun owners use their guns for defense up to 2.5 million times a year (seldom shooting them) and that criminals are deterred by their fear of armed citizens, and Arthur Kellermann, whose equally provocative study found that guns in the home were 43 times more likely to kill a resident or friend than an armed intruder. [Pg.152]

Kellermann, Arthur L., and Donald T. Reay. Protection or Peril New England Journal of Medicine, vol. 314, June 12, 1986, pp. 1557-1560. Highly influential but controversial study of the risks of keeping firearms in the home. The authors conclude that there are 43 suicides, criminal homicides, or accidental gunshot deaths for every case of homicide for self-protection. [Pg.173]

Kellermann, Arthur L., et al. Weapon Involvement in Home Invasion Crimes. JAMA, The Journal of the American Medical Association, vol. 273, June 14, 1995, pp. 1759ff. Analyzes home invasion crimes. The authors found that homeowners seldom used guns against intruders. Persons who resisted in some way were less likely to lose property but more likely to be injured. Security measures such as locks are likely to be more useful than firearms for deterring such invasions. [Pg.173]

Suter, Edgar A., James J. Fotis, and Arthur L. Kellermann. Weapons for Protection in Home Invasion Crimes. 7. 7Vl/4, The Journal of the American Medical Association, vol. 275, January 24, 1996, pp. 280ff. Suter argues that Kellermann s study of home invasions was skewed by being based only on police reports and trauma admissions and that what it really looked at was stealth crimes (burglaries), not true home invasions. Home-owner use of firearms is often not reported to police. Even under such... [Pg.178]
