Argues that use of guns for self-defense is underreported in surveys by government agencies because of fear of prosecution. Kleck s own survey finds an estimated 2.2 to 2.5 defensive gun uses per year. 

However, if criminologist Gary Kleck s estimate of 2 million defensive gun uses per year mentioned earlier is true, guns are used many times to defend people or property for each time they kill an innocent person. If so (and Kleck s estimates have in turn been challenged), does that mean guns do more good than harm ...

The article features a debate between Gary Kleck, whose research shows that gun owners use their guns for defense up to 2.5 million times a year (seldom shooting them) and that criminals are deterred by their fear of armed citizens, and Arthur Kellermann, whose equally provocative study found that guns in the home were 43 times more likely to kill a resident or friend than an armed intruder.
