Having considered reactor temperature and pressure, we are now in a position to judge whether the reactor phase will be gas, liquid, or multiphase. Given a free choice between gas- and liquid-phase reactions, operation in the liquid phase is usually preferred. Consider the single reaction system from Eq. (2.19) ... 

However, a note of caution should be added. In many multiphase reaction systems, rates of mass transfer between different phases can be just as important or more important than reaction kinetics in determining the reactor volume. Mass transfer rates are generally higher in gas-phase than liquid-phase systems. In such situations, it is not so easy to judge whether gas or liquid phase is preferred. 

The batch cycle time has been reduced from 2.6 to 1.3 hours. This means that a greater number of batches can be processed, and hence, if there are two reactors each with the original capacity, the process capacity has increased. However, the increase in capacity has been achieved at the expense of increased capital cost for the second reactor. An economic assessment is required before we can judge whether the tradeoff is justified. 

Whether parallel operations, larger or smaller items of equipment, and intermediate storage should be used can only be judged on the basis of economic tradeoffs. However, this is still not the complete picture as far as the batch process tradeoffs are concerned. So far the batch size has not been varied. Batch size can be varied as a function of cycle time. It is difficult to judge the accuracy of these methods because data are scarce. Table 4.9 compares the values obtained by different weighting methods with experimental values for a mixture of n-hexane-n-hexadecane at 25°C. The ASTM method shows results very close to those obtained experimentally. 

The normalized distillation curves, TBP, ASTM D 86, and ASTM D 1160, provide a way to judge the quality of a fractionation performed on petroleum cuts. 

In the feasibility phase the project is tested as a concept. Is it technically feasible and is it economically viable There may be a number of ways to perform a particular task (such as develop an oil field) and these have to be judged against economic criteria, availability of resources, and risk. At this stage estimates of cost and income (production) profiles will carry a considerable uncertainty range, but are used to filter out unrealistic options. Several options may remain under consideration at the end of a feasibility study. 

The project cashflow forms the basis of the economic evaluation methods which will be described. From the cashflow a number of economic indicators can be derived and used to judge the attractiveness of the project. Some of the techniques to be introduced allow the economic performance of proposed projects to be tested against investment criteria and also to be compared with alternative investments.

The great variety of inspection applications required the QAP system to perform relative measurements in judgeing certain conditions and not to restrict the user to dictated inspection conditions. One important example for MPI is for example the decision whether the magnetic particle suspension can be used or has to be changed. 

Therefore, it is important for judging the performance and the safety of the product to understand the size of the defect and the position by the ultrasonic method quantitatively. And, the reliability of the product improves further by feeding back this ultrasonic wave information to the manufacturing process. 

The size of the basis set is, however, only one criterion for judging the level of an ab-initio calculation. The situation is best illustrated by what has become known as a Pople diagram [27], as shown in Figure 7-24. 

Sometimes the crude substance may contain an insoluble impurity, and on cooling the solution it may be difficult to judge how much of the solid matter is merely undissolved impurity and how much is solute which has subsequently crystallised from solution. The energy differences among conforiiiers relative to the ground state are 0.0, 0.85, 1.62, and 3.32 kcal mol . The relative populations of the states, judged by the number of times they were found in a random search or 50 trials, are 0.16, 0.21, 0.15, and 0.08 when degeneracy is taken into account. In the limit of ver y many runs, a Boltzmann distr ibution would lead us to expect a ground state that is much more populous than the output indicates, but this sample is much too small for a statistical law to be valid. 

Unfortunately, addition of copper(II)nitrate to a solution of 4.42 in water did not result in the formation of a significant amount of complex, judging from the unchanged UV-vis absorption spectrum. Also after addition of Yb(OTf)3 or Eu(N03)3 no indications for coordination were observed. Apparently, formation of a six-membered chelate ring containing an amine and a ketone functionality is not feasible for these metal ions. Note that 4.13 features a similar arrangement and in aqueous solutions, likewise, does not coordinate significantly to all the Lewis acids that have been... 

To recall a personal experience, my research on carbocations and their related chemistry, because of its significance and relevance to biological systems and processes, was supported in part by NIH for nearly 30 years, for which I am most grateful. The resulting oligonucleotide is often of surprising purity as judged by analytic HPLC or electrophoresis, and up to 30 mg of a deoxyeicosanucleotide (20-base DNA) can be routinely obtained. Nevertheless small amounts of short sequences, resulting from capping and from base-catalysed hydrolysis, must always be removed by quick gel filtration, repeated ethanol precipitation from water (desalting), reverse-phase HPLC, gel electrophoresis, and other standard methods.
