Circumstances of control specifically for visual inspections, several conditions (e.g., amount of light, time for judgment, disturbing noise, visual product complexity) contribute to how well people are able to judge quality based on visual characteristics like color.

In the first study to report on this, Smith and Lewis (1985) prepared a videotape of 4 episodes of real fighting interspersed with 16 episodes of playful fighting (as judged by the researchers). They played this to 8 preschool children aged 4 years, and asked them whether each episode was playful or really fighting, and how they could tell. Six of the children showed considerable consistency in their judgments some were unable to give...
