Joint supervisions

It is noteworthy that Jones and Darby, who pioneered the enediyne rearrangement, now known as the Bergman rearrangement, and Nicolaou, who achieved the first total synthesis of the enediyne antibiotic calicheamicin 7 / were under the joint supervision of Profs. Franz Sondheimer and Peter Garratt. It might seem that all researchers in the enediyne field have been influenced by Sondheimer and Garratt. 

An asterisk denotes joint supervision of graduate work. The numbers refer to the enumeration in the Bibliography. The lowercase letters refer to the Edited Books section of the Bibliography. Those listed under my own name are those for which I am solely responsible, with the exception of 132, whose author is, or rather was, Aris Rutherford.

This relies on the integrity of the concrete construction itself with reference to design (crack control, joint spacing and detailing, concrete mix) and skilled workmanship and supervision. 

The knowledge required to implement Bayes formula is daunting in that a priori as well as class conditional probabilities must be known. Some reduction in requirements can be accomplished by using joint probability distributions in place of the a priori and class conditional probabilities. Even with this simplification, few interpretation problems are so well posed that the information needed is available. It is possible to employ the Bayesian approach by estimating the unknown probabilities and probability density functions from exemplar patterns that are believed to be representative of the problem under investigation. This approach, however, implies supervised learning where the correct class label for each exemplar is known. The ability to perform data interpretation is determined by the quality of the estimates of the underlying probability distributions. 

The fitter who installed the expansion joint incorrectly could have prevented the fire. So could the person who was responsible for her or his training and supervision so could the designers if they had not specified an expansion joint, had carried out a HAZOP, or had consulted experts so could the author of the company s design standards, and those responsible for the training of designers those responsible for inspection of workmanship, and anyone who kept his or her eyes open when walking round the plant. 

As Oberassistent, Hardegger supervised graduate students jointly with Professor Ruzicka. Klemens Scholz and Leo Blunschy were among his first graduate students, but Blunschy died before he could write his thesis. 

In 1945, Ken, who was now Lecturer at Bristol University, was again invited by Hirst to move with him to Manchester University, this time as Senior Lecturer in Organic Chemistry. Once more, it became necessary for Hirst to concentrate his efforts on University and Government committee work. Ken Jones, therefore, took charge of the carbohydrate-research group, and supervised the completion of the explosives work. During this interval, Ken enjoyed the able collaboration of Dr. T. G. Halsall in studies on the structures of starch, cellulose, and glycogen, and on the oxidation of carbohydrates by periodate. The close association of Ken with Professor Hirst, which continued at Manchester University until 1948, was a tremendously fruitful one over 50 joint publications resulted from their research on complex polysaccharides. 

We began experimenting with collaborative care models of patient care and thinking about how to train students in their use. The four of us—two psychiatrists and two family therapists—began to share patient care. That is, we began to provide joint clinical supervision to family medicine residents and family therapy interns, and we began to teach each other s students. ... 

For examplcj in a specific week, Dr. Albala and Dr. Patterson might exchange e-mails about a shared patient, jointly conduct live supervision for family medicine residents who are interviewing challenging patients Dr. Albala might lecture to Dr. Patterson s students about basic antidepressant medication. 

The work eovered by these specifieations ineludes furnishing all labor, materials, supervision and equipment neeessary for the ehemieal grout stabilization of and the eutoff of water flowing through loose soil and voids in the immediate area surrounding leaking joints of the sewer within the limits shown on the drawings. 

The side effects of suramin are fever, joint pains, photophobia, peripheral neuropathy and allergic reactions. The later phase of drug therapy may cause kidney damage and exfoliative dermatitis. The use of this drug has been recommended only under medical supervision. 

Other nonpharmaco logic therapeutic options include weight loss and surgery. Weight reduction helps to alleviate stress on inflamed joints. This should be instituted and monitored with close supervision of a health care professional. Tenosynovectomy, tendon repair, and joint replacements are surgical options for patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Such management usually is reserved for patients with severe disease. ... 

In some countries, recommended practices for minimizing residue and MRL concerns in exported foods have been developed for farmers and exporters. For example, it has been the practice of the Chilean Exporters Association jointly with the University of Chile to develop an information system for growers based on supervised trials to determine withholding periods (i.e., preharvest intervals) to meet the MRL standards recognized by the authorities in major export markets... 

But the developments in the UK were ad hoc and rather disorganised, and this was recognised by the Computer Board which, in 1973, set up a networking committee under the chairmanship of Prof. M. (Mike) Wells Leeds University and among whose members were Mervyn Williams (formerly of the Post Office), Roland Rosner (RAL), and Chris Morris (Bristol University). They reported to the Computer Board in 1974, recommending that a national network be set up and that its development be supervised by a six-person Joint Network Team (JNT). Although the report was accepted, these developments did not come about until 1979, and the proposed network, eventually called JANET (Joint Academic Network), did not come into full service until 1 April 1984. 

Even after production, transport and delivery to site there is a responsibility to maintain quality and this applies to the more difficult to supervise tasks of pipe jointing, bedding and backfilling.
