Joint Academic Network

Communications will become increasingly important. At the moment, teaching computers tend to be linked to each other only in local area networks (see Figure 4.2). In some cases, these are connected via campus mainframe networks to national networks such as JANET (Joint Academic Network). However, in the main, these wider communications are only used for such things as electronic mail. It is likely that, in the future, these links will be used... 

But the developments in the UK were ad hoc and rather disorganised, and this was recognised by the Computer Board which, in 1973, set up a networking committee under the chairmanship of Prof. M. (Mike) Wells Leeds University and among whose members were Mervyn Williams (formerly of the Post Office), Roland Rosner (RAL), and Chris Morris (Bristol University). They reported to the Computer Board in 1974, recommending that a national network be set up and that its development be supervised by a six-person Joint Network Team (JNT). Although the report was accepted, these developments did not come about until 1979, and the proposed network, eventually called JANET (Joint Academic Network), did not come into full service until 1 April 1984. 

The paper is presented in three parts. First, the tests employed to determine the mixed mode fracture envelope of a glass fibre reinforced epoxy composite adhesively bonded with either a brittle or a ductile adhesive are briefly described. These include mode I (DCB), and mixed mode (MMB) with various mixed mode (I/II) ratios. In the second part of the paper different structural joints will be discussed. These include single and double lap shear and L-specimens. In a recent European thematic network lap shear and double lap shear composite joints were tested, and predictions of failure load were made by different academic and industrial partners [9,10]. It was apparent that considerable differences existed between different analytical predictions and FE analyses, and correlation with tests proved complex. In particular, the progressive damage development in assemblies bonded with a ductile adhesive was not treated adequately. A more detailed study of damage mechanisms was therefore undertaken, using image analysis combined with microscopy to examine the crack tip strain fields and measure adherend displacements. This is described below and correlation is made between predicted displacements and failure loads, based on the mixed mode envelope determined previously, and measured values. 

The Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) is Europe s largest public-private initiative aiming to accelerate the development of better and safer medicines [27]. IMI supports collaborative research projects with the building of networks comprised of industrial and academic experts in order to boost European pharmaceutical innovation. It is a joint undertaking between the European Union and the European pharmaceutical industry association EFPIA [28].

The idea of addressing this gap in university education by founding a joint initiative of industry and academia came from the Hilti Corporation mid 1998. At that time, Hilti had already gained extensive experience through co-q)eration in the field of academic education, e.g. playing a key role in the CEMS (Community of European Management Schools) network. Today, both organisations are clearly different, but... 

These Joint Modules are by far the largest position in the UNITECH bndget, which is financed by the corporate partners. Through their investment decisions, e.g. to add the "Mid-Term week" to the programme, the Council made a clear statement that it considers joint events a central element to differentiate the UNITECH programme from other exchange schemes. As all events are joint productions of the academic and corporate partners, they also foster cooperation within the network.
