One patent describes a continuous process involving an aqueous alkah metal hydroxide, carbon disulfide, and an alcohol (82). The reported reaction time is 0.5—10 min before the mixture is fed to the dryer. The usual residence time is on the order of hours. A study ia the former USSR reported the use of the water—alcohol azeotrope for water removal from isobutyl or isoamyl alcohol and the appropriate alkah hydroxide to form the alkoxide prior to the addition of carbon disulfide (83). [Pg.366]

Dermal Effects. Skin irritation was noted in wildlife officers at the RMA after they handled sick or dead ducks without gloves (NIOSH 1981). Although the investigators concluded that diisopropyl methylphosphonate contributed to the local effects, a number of other compounds were present. Analysis of the pond water indicated the presence of a number of organic and inorganic contaminants, including diisopropyl methylphosphonate (11.3 ppm) aldrin (0.368 ppm) dieldrin (0.0744 ppm) dicyclo-pentadiene, bicycloheptadiene, diethyl benzene, dimethyl disulfide, methyl acetate, methyl isobutyl ketone, toluene, and sodium (49,500 ppm) chloride (52,000 ppm) arsenic (1,470 ppm) potassium (180 ppm) fluoride (63 ppm) copper (2.4 ppm) and chromium (0.27 ppm). In this chapter, we presented the principal products of RVX hydrolysis with excess water in an acid medium. It has been shown that after the 3 months exposure, close to 1% of the initial amount of RVX in the solution could be detected. According to data on RVX hydrolysis with an equimolar amount of water, the autocatalytic hydrolysis of RVX was almost completed after 3 months, since the RVX content in the sample was no more than 0.01%. Moreover, the reaction mixture was much poorer than in the case of hydrolysis with excess water. Isobutyl MPA, which catalyzes RVX degradation, was detected as the major component of the reaction mixture. Yang et al (1996) found 2-(diethyl amino)ethanethiol as the second major component of the mixture, but in our experiment it was almost completely converted into bis[2-(diethylamino)ethyl]disulfide. [Pg.85]

Dichloromethane, toluene, carbon disulfide, methyl ethyl ketone, methanol, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, hexane, methyl isobutyl ketone, and xylene are emitted in very large quantities. Methanol, ethylene glycol, toluene, xylene, and carbon disulfide occupy the highest places in Tables 14.32.1-14.32.3, followed by mefliyl ethyl ketone, dichloromethane, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, tert-butyl alcohol, hexane, and methyl isobutyl ketone. These eleven solvents constitute 86% of all 550,738 tons of solvents released and transferred per year. Methanol alone constitutes over a quarter (27.1%) of the released and transferred solvents. [Pg.1046]
