Solubilization studies on small organic molecules, such as methanol, acetic acid, and propylamine, by non-aqueous solutions of sodium and H>tassium dinonylnaphthalene sulphonates, and magnesium phenyl stearates have been reported [194, 214]. Bascom and Singleterry [213] indicated that in the initial stages of the uptake the solubilizate was co-ordinated by the cation. For methanol, which was solubilized to a larger extent than the other compounds at high concentrations, association with the hydrocarbon chains of the surfactant occurred. For this solubilizate there was some evidence of a decrease in micelle size on solubilization. A similar picture of a two-stage process in solubilization was apparent for acetic acid.
