Assuming we have selected the proper mode of chromatography, will the mixture dissolve in the mobile phase Ion-exchange columns must be run in polar-charged solvents. Size separation columns are not, in theory, affected by solvent polarity, and size columns for use in both polar and nonpolar solvents are available. In partition chromatography, we have nonpolar columns that can be run in polar or aqueous solvents, and polar columns that are only run in anhydrous, nonpolar solvents. Intermediate columns such as cyanopropyl or diol can be run in either polar or nonpolar solvents, although often with differing specificity. An amino column (actually a propylamino) acts in methylene chloride/hexane like a less polar silica column but in acetonitrile/water... [Pg.68]

The selection of column length depends on the required resolution and analysis time. Short columns (10-15 m) are useful for samples containing a relatively small number of chemicals and also for screening purposes. To keep the analysis time short and to minimize the adsorption, a 50 m column is useful only for very complex separations requiring maximum resolution. Intermediate column lengths of 25-30 m, providing sufficient separation power simultaneously with reasonable analysis time, are in most cases used for the separation of CWC-related chemicals. [Pg.188]

Finding that an intermediate column product can be recycled because a structure already exists to separate it is like discovering a recursive solution to our separation problem. This reason for recycling is different from the one for the previous alternative it is a necessary part of many of these flowsheets. [Pg.118]

If Fig. 1 still contains active columns corresponding to intermediates (i.e., N 0), we go back to phase 2 of the algorithm for the next iteration. If no intermediate columns remain (N = 0) the elimination is complete, and all direct mechanisms are in the set M. [Pg.159]

The deposition of Au on Ni(llO) leads to the formation of a one-layer surface alloy [17], in spite of the fact that Au and Ni are immiscible metals. Starting with a single gold adatom deposited on a hollow site on the Ni(l 10) substrate, we consider five possible configurations, shown in Fig. 8. Table 3 displays results for the energy of formation per atom of each cell. These configurations include a Au atom located (a) in the overlayer (Au(0)), (b) in a substituted site in the surface plane (Au(S)), with the substituted Ni atom in the overlayer nearest-neighbor site (Au(S)Ni(0)i), (c) same, with the substituted Ni atom in the overlayer, far from the impurity (Au(S)Ni(0)f), (d) in the first plane below the surface (lb) with the displaced Ni atom somewhere in the overlayer, (Au(lb)+Ni(0)), and (e) two planes below the surface plane (Au(2b)+Ni(0)). The intermediate columns indi-... [Pg.51]

A chromatographic sample introduction technique in volatile components which are purged from a liquid medium by bubbling gas through it. The components are then concentrated by trapping them on a short intermediate column, which is subsequently heated to drive the components on to the analytical column for separation. [Pg.173]

The frontal chemical concentration method can also be used for the intermediate concentration trace amounts of heavy components [60] in the analysis of gaseous monomers (ethylene, propylene). The concentration was conducted on a short intermediate column containing diethanolamine and pure carbon dioxide was used as the carrier gas. The method permits three steps to be integrated into a single run preliminary separation, concentration of heavy trace components and analytical determination of the composition of the concentrate. The concentration of the heavy trace components to be determined was 10" %. Trace analytical methods based on selective retention of the main component are becoming more common in chromatography. [Pg.257]

Axial loads can also result when a vertical vessel, stack, or silo is transported and erected from the horizontal position due to bending of the shell. This procedure defines critical stress and critical load and differentiates between long, short, and intermediate columns. [Pg.85]

For short and intermediate cylinders the critical stress is independent of length. For long cylinders the length of the cylinder is a key factor. The range of cylinders whose slenderness ratios are less than Euler s critical value are called short or intermediate columns. [Pg.85]

The entrainer flow rate influences expenditures for separation not only in extractive distillation column itself, but also in the column of the entrainer recovery. In the case of separation of a multicomponent azeotropic mixture in an autoextractive distillation column (see Chapter 8), the intermediate columns can be located between this column and the column of autoentrainer recovery. In this case, the flow rate of the entrainer also influences expenditures for separation in the intermediate columns. In connection with the aforesaid, the necessity arises to carry... [Pg.248]

The final choice of design and mode parameters is carried out taking into consideration expenditures on separation not only in the column of autoextractive distillation, but also in that of the entrainer or autoentrainer recovery and in the intermediate columns, if there are any. [Pg.249]

A matrix product formed in this way can be used to generate matrices for the operator products we need when considering compound operations. For example, in the NH3 case of Figure 4.6, a rotation can be generated by applying the C3 matrix twice. This can be done by applying the C3 matrix once and then using the intermediate column vector in a second application ... [Pg.320]

Taking also into account the available geotechnical information for this site, foundation beams are provided at the periphery of the building, along the axis of intermediate columns and below the auxiliary columns supporting the loft. A steel staircase is provided to connect the ground floor with the loft. [Pg.2628]
