The Self-defining Text Archive and Retrieval (STAR) file format addresses primarily the problem of the inflexibility of the PDB file format, its fixed sets of allowable fields, and their strong dependence on order, To overcome the problems described, both the data. structure and the actual data items within a STAR file arc self-defined, which means that they are preceeded by corresponding names (labels) which identify and describe the data. The data may be of any type and there is no predefined order of the data. STAR files, in contrast to PDB files, are easy to read and write manually. The whole syntax of STAR files is very simple and is defined by only a few rules ... 

Isoparametric mapping removes tlie geometrical inflexibility of rectangular elements and therefore they can be used to solve many types of practical problems. For example, the isoparametric C continuous rectangular Hermite element provides useful discretizations in the solution of viscoelastic flow problems. 

Spray characteristics of pressure nozzles depend on the pressure and nozzle-orifice size. Pressure affects not only the spray characteristics but also the capacity. If it is desired to reduce the amount of liquid sprayed by lowering the pressure, then the spray may become coarser. To correct this, a smaller orifice would be inserted, which might then require a higher pressure to produce the desired capacity, and a spray that would be finer than desired might result. Multiple nozzles tend to overcome this inflexible charac teristic of pressure atomization, although several nozzles on a diyer complicate the chamber design and air-flow pattern and risk collision of particles, resulting in nonuniformity of spray and particle size. 

The prime function of the saturated acid is to space out the double bonds and thus reduce the density of cross-linking. Phthalic anhydride is most commonly used for this purpose because it provides an inflexible link and maintains the rigidity in the cured resin. It has been used in increasing proportions during the past decade since its low price enables cheaper resins to be made. The most detrimental effect of this is to reduce the heat resistance of the laminates but this is frequently unimportant. It is usually produced by catalytic oxidation of o-xylene but sometimes naphthalene and is a crystalline solid melting at 131°C. 

The resins are cross-linked and the molecular segments between the cross-links are rigid and inflexible. As a consequence the resins have an excellent heat resistance, as measured in terms of maintenance of rigidity on heating, but are rather brittle. 

Flocculation units should have multiple compartments and should be equipped with adjustable speed mechanical stirring devices to permit meeting changed conditions. In spite of simplicity and low maintenance, non-mechanical, baffled basins are undesirable because of inflexibility, high head losses, and large space requirements. Mechanical flocculators may consist of rotary, horizontal-shaft reel units as shown in Figure 9. 

The contractor at Site H had established area and personnel sampling consistent with HAZWOPER requirements. A photo ionization detector (PID) and a real-time aerosol monitor (RAM) were used on a daily basis to screen for potentially hazardous levels of contaminants. On a weekly basis, personal air samples were collected and submitted for laboratory analysis. PPE requirements, however, were often not based on this data because the oversight agency had established inflexible minimum PPE requirements. The audit team found many of the PPE requirements on Site H to be excessive in light of site monitoring data and hazard determinations. 

The main advantage of absorption is its applicability to the control of pollutant gases present in large concentrations (several percent by volume). In these applications, removal efficiencies of 98°/ or greater can be achieved. The main disadvantage is inflexibility to achieve the best performance, the gas stream components are fixed once the column is designed, (see Table 13.1.3)...

The diffusion of waterpower was initially slow— perhaps due to its relatively high capital costs, its geographical inflexibility, and the abundance of manual labor in both the classical Mediterranean world and m China. Only in the declining days of the Roman Empire, for example, did watermills become the standard means of grinding gram m some areas, displacing animal- and human-powered mills. 

If the plan of the building (and the same applies to its cross-sectional features) is precisely and inflexibly related to the initial plant layout and the production processes known at design stage, non-adaptability to later desirable changes in use is clearly a durability factor. 

In general, the tables simply provide recommendations for the operational control of FW and BW chemistry and are not designed to be a set of inflexible rules. Consequently, if experience confirms that alternative program control limits will lead to safer, easier, and more reliable operation of the boiler plant, then experience should be the deciding factor. 

Most biological polymers, such as proteins and nucleic acids and some synthetic polymers, have relatively inflexible chains. For rigid particles, the size is no longer of predominant importance, because the polymer chain is no longer in the form of a flexible random coil instead, shape becomes an important parameter.
