United States Caustic Soda Production. In 1987 U.S. production of caustic soda increased to 10.4 million tons (fig. 1), more than 10% over that of the previous year, furthermore, 1988 production was up another 6.7% to 11.1 million tons. The demand for caustic soda has been very strong in recent years as evidenced by both increased U.S. consumption and a strong export demand. In 1987 the United States exported 1.5 million tons, 14.5% of the total caustic soda production (6), representing a 25.5% increase over exports in 1986. Then, in 1988, caustic soda exports grew by another 4.1%. A weak doUar helped boost the 1987 exports. Growth slowed in 1988, however, as a result of an industry (and world) wide caustic soda shortage, which was caused by lower U.S. chlorine consumption and forced allocations. Because industries switched from caustic to soda ash where possible, the lower 1988 export growth was not indicative of caustic soda s export potential. [Pg.478]

Wet-Process Phosphoric Acid. As indicated in Figure 7, over 95% of the phosphate fertilizer used in the United States is made by processes that require an initial conversion of all or part of the phosphate ore to phosphoric acid. On a worldwide basis also, the proportion of phosphate fertilizer made with phosphoric acid is very high. Thus processes for production of phosphoric acid are of great importance to the fertilizer industry (see PHOSPHORIC ACID AND THE PHOSPHATES). [Pg.224]

Epidemiologic studies in Japan indicate an increased risk of stomach cancer owing to consumption of broiled fish and meats (116). In the United States, stomach cancer incidence has steadily declined since the 1940s, whereas consumption of broiled food has increased (108). In addition, the average human intake of PAHs is only 0.002 of that required to produce cancer in half of animals fed. Test results are often contradictory (117) and many components of food, such as vitamin A, unsaturated fatty acids, thiols, nitrites, and even saUva itself, tend to inhibit the mutagenic activity of PAHs (118—120). Therefore, the significance of PAHs in the human diet remains unknown (121,109). [Pg.481]

Human growth hormone, used as a human pharmaceutical, is approved for only one indication in the United States, treatment of growth failure owing to hGH deficiency, a condition known as pituitary dwarfism. In the United States, the acetylene production exceeded 450, 000 t/yr between 1963 and 1970, but then declined until it hit a minimum production level below 150, 000 t/yr in 1982. As can be seen in Figure 8, the proportion of world pig iron produced in the United States has decreased dramatically since 1950. Also notable is the widening gap between pig iron and steel production, indicating the increasing use of recycled iron or scrap (see Recycling, ferrous metals) and alternative iron sources such as DRI and HBI. Reviews on the occurrence, biochemical basis, and treatment of lead toxicity in children (11) and workers (3,12,13) have been pubhshed. Liver Effects. In 1980 a 2-year feeding study carried out as part of the NTP/NCI Bioassay Program in the United States (38,39) indicated that DEHP causes increased incidence of Hver tumors in rats and mice and that DEHA had a similar effect in mice but not rats.
