Insect Cells. In this system the cDNA is inserted into the genome of an insect vims, baculovims. Insect cells, or Hve insect larvae, are then infected with the vims. In this way advantage is taken of the vims s natural machinery for repHcation utilizing the insect cell. This is one of the best systems available for high level production of native protein having post-translational modifications similar to those seen in mammalian cells. Disadvantages of this system include lytic—batch variations, comparatively slow growth, and cosdy scale-up. 

Parallel to the activities in the treatment of pernicious anemia were observations in the 1930s that most farm animals had a requirement for an unknown factor beyond the vitamins then known. The lack of this factor became apparent, eg, when chicks or pigs fed a diet with only vegetable protein evidenced slow growth rate and high mortahty. It became apparent that the requited factor, termed animal protein factor, was present in animal sources such as meat and tissue extracts, milk whey, and cow manure. Subsequent to its isolation, it was rapidly shown that vitamin B 2 is the same as animal protein factor. 

Insufficient zinc results in slowed growth, delayed wound healing, poor appetite, mental lethargy, and sexual immaturity and it interferes with the immune response. The main function of zinc in metaboHsm is enzymatic and there is evidence of other physiologic roles, eg, in stabilization of membrane stmcture (57). 

Polychloroprene consumption woddwide, except for eastern European countries and China, has plateaued at about 250,000 metric tons per year with some continued slow growth expected. Annual production averaged 307,000 metric tons during the 1980s with at least part of the difference being exported to formerly SociaUst countries. Production in Armenia has been limited to a fraction of its capacity of 60 metric tons by environmental problems and, in fact, is currendy shut down. The People s RepubHc of China has three plants with a combined capacity of 20 metric tons (2). 

First, the pressure vessel must be safe from plastic collapse that is, the stresses must everywhere be below general yield. Second, it must not fail by fast fracture if the largest cracks it could contain have length 2a (Fig. 16.4), then the stress intensity K CTV must everywhere be less than K. Finally, it must not fail by fatigue the slow growth of a crack to the critical size at which it runs. 

It is interesting to note that although the market for natural rubber has grown considerably, that for the other diene rubbers has either been of slow growth or has declined. Data for approximate overall plastics production (not from IlSRP data) have also been included as a comparison of the relative sizes of the rubber and plastics markets.
