INDEX quality factor

Some quality factors, especially secondary ones, depend directly on material or structural attributes of the product. These product quality factors are often arbitrary and can only be qualitatively evaluated by panels of consumers or experts. Convenience for use, product stability, and ability for human skin protection are all examples of these quality factors. Each arbitrary performance index has specific relationships with the material/structural attributes. In such cases, the desirable quality factor can be realized by directly changing the formulation without concerning any of the performance indices. An example can be that to make a laundry detergent product more convenient to use, the product form can be changed from powder to tablet. Another example is that to make a highly biodegradable product, surfactants with less branching should be used. [Pg.244]

The formol index (total free amino acids) was the best predictor of browning rate of concentrates during storage for a given commodity. While haze and sediment formation were quality factors of major interest in this study, none of the juices or concentrates produced were particularly troublesome in this regard. To a plastic producer (i.e. processor), melt index is one property that is needed in order to evaluate whether the same process can be used irrespective of whether it uses virgin or recycled polymers. This will tell if it is possible to process the recycled polymeric materials in the same set-up as usual. Several other properties are needed in order to quality mark the materials. The melt index is related to what final tensile properties a product obtains, this in turn has an impact on the expected life-time. The purity of a recyclate stream with respect to the amount of foreign polymer in the stream has an impact on melt-index, but will also be an important factor for the final mechanical properties. Another very important property is the amount of low molecular weight compounds, which may be of vastly different types. Typically such an analysis will show the presences of additives and their degradation products, degradation products of the polymeric matrices, traces of solvents, initiators, or catalysts, compounds related to the use of the plastics and others. [Pg.205]
