The Natural Reactor. Some two biUion years ago, uranium had a much higher (ca 3%) fraction of U than that of modem times (0.7%). There is a difference in half-hves of the two principal uranium isotopes, U having a half-life of 7.08 x 10 yr and U 4.43 x 10 yr. A natural reactor existed, long before the dinosaurs were extinct and before humans appeared on the earth, in the African state of Gabon, near Oklo. Conditions were favorable for a neutron chain reaction involving only uranium and water. Evidence that this process continued intermittently over thousands of years is provided by concentration measurements of fission products and plutonium isotopes. Usehil information about retention or migration of radioactive wastes can be gleaned from studies of this natural reactor and its products (12). [Pg.222]

Applicability/Limitations. In-situ treatment can be used when it is uneconomical to haul or when infeasible or uneconomical to dig or pump the contaminated waste matrix for treatment in a reactor. This approach should be used whenever excavation or removal causes an increased threat to human health. It can reduce the cost of a remediation program. Because chemicals are applied to the contaminated waste matrix, specifically soil and groundwater, a potential exists for reaction with the soil. Permeability problems can occur as the result of precipitate formation. This can result in inadequate mixing of the contaminant with the treatment chemical. Gas generation may also occur. [Pg.149]

A critical assembly is a split bed on which fissionable material used to mock up up a separated reactor core that is stacked half on each half. One half is on roller guides so that the two halves may be quickly pulled apart if the neutron multiplication gets too high. Many accidents, particularly on batch plants, have been due to runaway reactions, that is, reactions that get out of control. The reaction becomes so rapid that the cooling system cannot prevent a rapid rise in temperature, and/or the relief valve or rupture disc cannot prevent a rapid rise in pressure, and the reactor ruptures. Examples are described in the chapter on human error (Sections 3.2.1 e and 3.2.8), although the incidents were really due to poor design, which left traps into which someone ultimately fell. [Pg.380]

One of the more promising therapies for certain kinds of cancers involves the use of interferon, a protein that occurs in minute quantities in the body where it is an essential part of the body s immune system. Interferon can be produced outside the body in cultures of transformed lymphoblastoid cells. A few years ago, it was possible to culture these human cells on scales up to a few hundred milliliters.
