Another groundwater contaminant that can be removed by reduction reactions is perchlorate. Ammonium perchlorate is a solid rocket fuel, and wastes from its manufacturing have contaminated some irrigation and drinking water sources, among them the lower Colorado River in the American Southwest. Elevated perchlorate levels have been linked to human health effects, and because perchlorate has been found in vegetable crops such as lettuce, there is concern that this contamination could have serious consequences. [Pg.1364]

Another important test location factor is the availability of water for irrigation and for preparation of the spray solution. The use of culinary water sources (either private or public water sources intended for human consumption) or groundwater (from wells) is usually less problematic than using water from surface sources (rivers, lakes, or canals). The potential of diisopropyl methylphosphonate to cause eye irritation was evaluated by direct application of the compound to the conjunctival sac of one eye in each of nine New Zealand White rabbits. Significant irritation of the conjunctivae was observed in all rabbits, and the comeal surface was characterized by diffuse opacity. The opacity was temporary and cleared within 8 days. Irrigation with lukewarm water following application of diisopropyl methylphosphonate reduced but did not prevent irritation (Hart 1976). These data indicate that diisopropyl methylphosphonate is probably an eye irritant in humans at sufficiently high concentrations. However, eye irritation is not expected to occur as a result of groundwater contamination in persons living near the RMA. [Pg.89]

Acrolein degrades quickly in soils and in plant tissues, regardless of mode of administration. Most terrestrial crop plants easily tolerate 25,000 pg acrolein/L of irrigation water, and some can tolerate 70,000 to 80,000 pg/L without adverse effects. Terrestrial plants were adversely affected at atmospheric concentrations of 500 pg acrolein/L air, but this concentration exceeds the recommended value of 110 pg/L (0.25 mg/m3) air for protection of human health in occupational settings. [Pg.751]
