Alkylbenzene sulfonates are the main surfactants used in household cleaners, detergents and sanitary formulations, as well as in industrial and institutional cleaners. They are used in the production of fabrics. They are also used as emulsifiers, in many technical processes as wetting agents and dispersants, e.g. in polymerisation processes and in the formulation of plant protection products.

Over the last 30 years, ethanol s role as a solvent has increased sharply, while its role as a chemical intermediate has declined. In 1990, 59% of the 890 X 10 L demand was used for solvents and the remaining 41% was used for chemical intermediates (283). In 1960, solvents accounted for only 24% of the demand. The 1990 solvent uses were toiletries and cosmetics, 33% coatings, inks, and proprietary blends, 29% detergents and household cleaners, 14% external pharmaceuticals, 7% insecticides and disinfectants, 7% and miscellaneous, 10%. Ethanol demand for solvent appHcations has been fairly stable in recent years, growing at an average aimual rate of 2%. VOC regulations could impact its solvent use, particularly in areas like California, where ethanol in aerosols like hair spray and deodorants have come under scmtiny.

Choose acids or alkalis to render the optimum pH for best performance of surfactants and enzymes (typically 6-8 for dishwashing liquids, 9.5-11 for laundry detergents, and 8-12 for allpurpose household cleaners). 

Ordinary all-purpose household cleaner is sold in concentrated liquid form, and requires dilution by consumers before application. This potentially causes either wastage or overdosing as the consumer is left alone to judge the correct amount of detergent to use. In addition, acid/alkali bums for consumers are not uncommon during the dilution process. Hence a demand for a more convenient product is apparent in the market. 

The balance of the industrial ethyl alcohol is in demand as a solvent in personal care products (aftershave lotion, mouthwash), inks, cosmetics, detergents, household cleaners, pharmaceuticals, industrial coatings, and as a processing solvent. 

Industrial uses of ethanol include solvents (especially for toiletries and cosmetics, coatings and inks, and detergents and household cleaners), and chemical intermediates (especially ethyl acrylate, vinegar, ethylamines, and glycol ethers). Most corn fermentation alcohol is used in fuel, industrial solvents and chemicals, and beverages. 

Among the product bases whose pH usually lies outside the neutral range are acid and alkaline household cleaners cold wave lotions, hair straighteners, and depilatories (alkaline, pH > 10) and antiperspirants (acid, pH < 5). Fabric softeners are acidic, with pH values between 3 and 5. Machine dishwashing detergent powders are alkaline and contain perborates, which are oxidizing agents. 

Synthetic ethanol has the following uses as a chemical intermediate (for ethyl acetate, ethyl acrylate, glycol ethers, ethylamines, etc.), 30 percent in toiletries and cosmetics, 20 percent as a coatings solvent, 15 percent as a raw material for vinegar, 10 percent in household cleaners, 7 percent in detergents, 5 percent in pharmaceuticals, 5 percent in printing inks, 3 percent and in miscellaneous uses, 5 percent. 

Household Cleaners. Household ammonia, liquid window cleaners, liquid allpurpose cleaners, and various other household cleaning products constitute this small market for ammonia. Ammonia is also used to make surfactants that go into liquid dishwashing detergents.57... 

Sometimes a flask will not be clean after a washing with detergent and acetone. At that point try an abrasive household cleaner. 

Cleaning products are used regularly in most households These include dishwashing detergents, denture cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners, oven cleaners, drain cleaners, wood and metal cleaners and polishes, tub, tile, and shower cleaners, bleach and pool chemicals. Toxic chemicals contained in household cleaners include glycol ethers, aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, surfactants, and heavy metals J32l...

The objectives for the product divisions tend to be rather general. The exceptions are those for the Detergents/Household Cleaners division, which are specific, measurable and time-related.
