Hospital for Special Surgery

Born in 1965 in Utrecht, the Netherlands, Marjolein van der Meulen received her Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1987. Thereafter, she received her MS (1989) and PhD (1993) from Stanford University. She spent three years as a biomedical engineer at the Rehabilitation R D Center of the Department of Veterans Affairs in Palo Alto, CA. In 1996, Marjolein joined the faculty of Cornell University as an Assistant Professor in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. She is also an Assistant Scientist at the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York. She received a FIRST Award from the National Institutes of Health in 1995 and a Faculty Early Career Development Award from the National Science Foundation in 1999. Her scientific interests include skeletal mechanobiology and bone structural behavior.

Launched in 1998, the Solar Elbow System is similar to the Hospital for Special Surgery design that had been previously marketed as the Osteonics Linked Semi-Constrained Total Elbow. This device is a linked semiconstrained system with cemented titanium ulnar and humeral components. The articulation uses a UHMWPE bushing with a metal axle that locks into the lateral portion of the humeral component. A C-shaped UHMWPE bearing surface is also attached to the humeral component. The articulation is loaded centrally along a concave UHMWPE surface. The rest of the ulnar component articulates with the condylar portion of the humeral bushing at extremes of motion... 

Hospital in New York. The primary motivation originally was the thinly spread expertise around the world for certain specialized types of surgery. Another motivation is the lack of availability of any kind of special surgery in certain remote areas ships and submarines at sea contaminated areas due to a nuclear accident, chemical spill, epidemics, or bioterror or in space (e.g., NASA or other remote missions providing the robots to be pre-located or delivered). 

Veterinarians have many different tools, products, and options for the treatment of disease. Medicines, such as antibiotics, urinary acidifiers, anthelmintics, steroids, and pain relievers, may be administered by mouth or injection. Intravenous fluids, oxygen therapy, surgery, and many other procedures are performed by veterinarians in small private clinics. More advanced treatments such as the implantation of pacemakers, hip replacements, or cataract removal are performed by veterinarians in university veterinary hospitals or specialized clinics. 

In the West AngUa and Oxford region study, the epidemiology of patients treated in accident and emergency departments or admitted to a hospital for bum care during 1994 and 1995 was reviewed [16]. Approximately half of the hospital-admitted patients were treated in specialized bum units, about one-fourth were treated on plastic surgery wards, and the rest were admitted to other specialty... 

In addition, before going for help, you should compile a list of individualized questions that account for your own special needs, writing them down so they can be easily remembered and taking notes on how the therapist answers each question. It is important for you to remember how important this decision may be for your health. You wouldn t necessarily buy the first house you see, or have your surgery at the first hospital you pass.
