Herbs, dressings

This savory herb dressing is reminiscent of Greek and Italian dressings, and is far more enjoyable than the bottled versions. [Pg.160]

It is said that the soldiers of Darius the Great (521-486 bc) emperor of Persia baked a kind of flat bread on their shields and then covered it with cheese and dates when on campaign. Cato the Elder, i.e. Marcus Porcius Cato (234-149 bc), wrote of a flat round of dough dressed with olive oil, herbs and honey baked on stones . Shops were found in the ruins of Pompeii apparently equipped for the manufacture and sale of flat breads, possibly pizzas. [Pg.199]

DO NOT dress the rice while it s hot (heat will wilt the herbs). [Pg.92]

Lunch draws a well-dressed crowd of yuppies and professors. The Morning Star salad is colorfully presented with romaine lettuce, apple, cottage and white cheddar chesses, sprouts, shredded carrots, raisins, cashews and sunflower seeds. House umeboshi plum dressing - Japanese plums, oil, egg and herbs - is served on the side. The sprouted mushroom sandwich is a nice cross between a hot and cold sandwich - warm sauteed mushrooms, avocado, cheddar, Parmesan, and a healthy dose of sprouts with a cool cucumber-dill dressing on whole wheat sunflower bread. [Pg.95]

The restaurant is perfect for a noon-time getaway - try the homemade dal, a lentil soup with loads of onions and mustard seeds. The chapati roll-up is a good deal at 4.95 - whole wheat flat bread stuffed with the curry of the day, lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, red cabbage and bean sprouts, complemented with your choice of one of the many house dressings. (The sesame herb was my favorite.)... [Pg.209]

There are plenty of things to choose from for breakfast, lunch or dinner. For a nice salad try the NuMex Caesar - romaine lettuce, tomatoes, roasted peppers, baked tortillas, toasted pepitas, poblano caesar dressing, and red chili croutons. A good sandwich is the Westsider - baked Japanese eggplant, roasted red peppers, melted mozzarella, tomatoes and fresh herb mustard on a multigrain bun. They do serve chicken and fish here, but no red meat. [Pg.219]

In 1665, Friar Domingo Navarette described tofii as a common and cheap food of China. They drew the milk out of the Kidney-Beans and turning it, make great Cakes of it like Cheeses... All the Mass is as white as the very Snow... Alone it is insipid, but very good dress d as I say and excellent fry d in Butter. It is incredible what vast quantities of it are consum d in China, and very hard to conceive there should be such abundance of Kidney-Beans. That Chinese who has Teu Fu tofu) herbs and rice, need no other sustenance to work... (Cummins, 1962). [Pg.22]

Some wounds do not respond well to a wet dressing like a salve. In that case, I use powdered herbs directly on the wound. Herbal wound powders, ground fine, stop bleeding and facilitate rapid healing while preventing infection. After the wound has begun to heal, switching to a wound salve continues that process. There is probably no more powerful way to treat skin infections than with powdered herbs. I have yet to find a wound infection that will not respond to one. [Pg.109]

Traditional use A decoction of the herb is taken to treat headaches, and ground seeds mixed with other pharmaceuticals are recommended for treatment of general weakness and to reinforce the nervous system. Avicenna applied the plant as a dressing or ointment with honey to treat hard and malignant tumors, as well as podagra, and used as an expectorant mixed with other drugs (Khalmatov 1964). [Pg.162]

Place the dressing in a large bowl, marinade the cheese, and add the salad leaves, bell peppers, and scallion. Mix well and garnish with the herbs and blossoms and the roasted sesame. [Pg.1063]

The key factors that influence the selection of the hydrocolloid thickener for this type of application are its stability in relation to the product formulation and process and the stability and rheology of the final product. Dressings for example are usually manufactured with a cold make-up process. They often have high levels of salt and acid, which influence the hydration and stability of the hydrocolloid. Stability in the final product in terms of oil emulsions and suspension of herbs and spices is critical. The flow properties are also important and the pseudoplastic behaviour of hydrocolloids is ideal. This provides suspension and stability due to high viscosity at low shear rates but the product remains pourable at higher shear rates. Sauces are usually prepared with a hot process and consideration of the heat stability of the hydrocolloid is important. [Pg.26]

Mixtures of herbs and lemon juice may be substituted for oily, salty, and/or sugary dressings when certain types of restricted diets must be followed. [Pg.622]

Wound dressings have been used since the dawn of time. Dressings have progressed from herbs combined with leaves or rags used by primitive man to a complex product involving synthesized polymeric materials compounded with an engineered multi-layer textile structure. [Pg.92]

For the next several centuries, dressings did not progress far beyond the traditional rag and herb structure. It wasnit until after World War II that medical science began to investigate other procedures and materials for wound care. One major development in wound treatment was combating infections frequently caused by poorly laundered hospital cloths (12). In the 1950 s, synthetic materials were first used to help promote healing. [Pg.93]
