PORCIUS CATO, MARCUS (234-149). Consul in 196, censor in 184, and renowned for the stern morality of his character and opinions. [Pg.242]

PORCIUS CATO, MARCUS (95-46). As rigid a moralist as his greatgrandfather the censor and a doctrinaire Stoic as well both an opponent of the First Triumvirate and singularly unlovable in his own right, he was praetor in 54 but failed to be elected consul. After he committed suicide after the Battle of Thapsus in the Civil War, he became (retroactively) the embodiment of principled republicanism. [Pg.243]

It is said that the soldiers of Darius the Great (521-486 bc) emperor of Persia baked a kind of flat bread on their shields and then covered it with cheese and dates when on campaign. Cato the Elder, i.e. Marcus Porcius Cato (234-149 bc), wrote of a flat round of dough dressed with olive oil, herbs and honey baked on stones . Shops were found in the ruins of Pompeii apparently equipped for the manufacture and sale of flat breads, possibly pizzas. [Pg.199]
