It is often assumed that, particularly in the aqueous environment, there is a steady-state situation, i. e. that the concentrations of pollutants in the water and the suspended solids is in equilibrium. Hendriks [40] verified this assumption. He found that the ratios of concentrations in different organisms and those in suspended solids of a series of organic compounds were not significantly different fi-om the calculated ratios that were based on existing bioaccumulation and sorption relationships. The organisms that were studied were chironomidae, mollusca, Crustacea and a number of fish species. 

A later study by these same authors (Hendriks et al., 1985) tested the effect of intraperitoneal valerenic acid compared to diazepam, chlorpromazine, and pentobarbital on ability to walk on a rotating rod and grip strength in mice. The effects of valerinic acid on spontaneous motor activity and on pentobarbital -induced sleeping time were also assessed. Diazepam, a muscle relaxant, affected the grip test but not the rotarod test, while chlorpromazine, a neuroleptic, affected the rotarod test but not the grip test.

The selective oxidation of lactose to lactobionate with air on palladium-bismuth catalysts was first reported in patents [47]. Hendriks et al. [16] studied the oxidation of a 0.5 mol solution of lactose as a function of pH, temperature and Pd/Bi ratios of promoted Pd/C catalysts. Sodium lactobionate was obtained with 100% selectivity up to 95% conversion on Pd-Bi/C catalysts (Bi/Pd = 0.5) at 333 K and pH 9. Oxygen mass-transfer limited the maximum initial reaction rate (0.47 mol kg s ). The catalyst was recycled 15 times without any significant loss of activity and selectivity.

Controlled studies have been carried out using crossover or parallel study designs. Their duration has mainly been short, typically 4-8 weeks, except for the North Karelia Stand Ester Study (Miettinen et al, 1995) and the TNG Study on Sterol Ester Spreads (Brink and Hendriks, 2000), each of which lasted for 52 weeks. 

As with the North Karelia Stanol Ester Study, a 12-month study on sterol esters incorporated into margarine was conducted recently in the Netherlands (Brink and Hendriks, 2000 Hendriks et ai, 2001). Adults (185) consumed 1.6 g/day of soy sterols as esters incorporated into margarine. Semm total and LDL cholesterol concentrations reduced rapidly (within 3 weeks) by 5% and 1%, respectively, and remained at the same level for the duration of the experiment. However, surprisingly, the reductions in cholesterol levels were only seen in the male and not in the female participants (Figure 11).
