Hazards first aid

Information on hazards is available from various sources. Chemical manufacturers produce hazard data sheets for their products and some of the major companies produce comprehensive databases. Each data sheet contains information on the physical description of the compound, stability, hazards, first aid measures, storage, transport and disposal requirements.

This handbook is designed for people who have to find data quickly in emergency situations. Data are provided in the form of MSDSs including chemical name and synonyms. DOT hazard class andguide number, physical description, chemical properties, health hazards, first aid procedures, and hazards associated with fire, reactivity, corrosivity, and radioactivity.

A critical aspect of chemical industry product labeling is the fact of government regulation of many of the products which are considered to be potentially hazardous to consumers and/or workers. Such products are subject to various federal, state and local laws and ordinances which in many instances mandate the inclusion of specific warnings on product labels. These warnings describe the hazards and inform the user as to proper use procedures, actions to be taken in the event of exposure to hazard, first aid or medical advice, and disposal procedures, all in addition to whatever other material the seller might wish to include on the product label. 

Suppliers and generators of hazardous materials used in the workplace are required to document the specific hazards and related safety precautions and procedures. To do this, they generally create MSDSs. An MSDS contains information about chemical properties, health and physical hazards, first aid and medical treatment, emergency response, and the handling and disposal of chemicals. The MSDS should be concise, and immediately accessible and usable. MSDSs are available for chemical products from all U.S. and most European suppliers or manufacmrers.

Since many chemical plants have severe health hazards, it is essential to provide medical facilities and first aid stations. Infonnation on an MSDS aids in tlie selection of safe products and helps prepare employers and employees to respond effectively to daily exposure situations as well as to emergency situations. It is also a source of information for identifying chemical hazards.
