Reppe process yields are about 80%, but the usual acetylene drawbacks are present hazardous materials handling and higher-cost raw materials. As a result the acetylene route plants are not being duplicated as they wear out, giving way to the newer technologies. [Pg.283]

Chemistry structural engineering metallurgy hazardous materials handling and transportation. [Pg.737]

Hazard communication has been one of the most frequently cited OSHA violations. Chapter 2 will help in hazard commnnication training and proper writing of material safety data sheets. The chapter will also go into detail about hazardous materials handling and the Chemical Transportation Emergency Center (CHEMTREC). [Pg.153]

Prepare and implement an emergency preparedness and response plan. Such a plan is required because of the large quantities of ammonia and other hazardous materials stored and handled on site. [Pg.63]

Health Hazards Information - Information included are recommended personal protective equipment for hazard materials handling specialist, typical symptoms following exposure to the chemical, general first aid treatment procedures, and various toxicological information including toxicity by ingestion, inhalation and short term exposures. Additional information included are the liquid or solid irritant characteristics and odor threshold data. [Pg.439]

An international non-profit educational association representing transporters and container manufacturers of hazardous materials, substances, and wastes concerned with the safe handling of these substances. Provides regulator assistance and advice for establishing hazardous materials compliance and safety programs. [Pg.278]

C. Materials handling and transfer this penalty takes account of the hazard involved in the handling, transfer and warehousing of the material. [Pg.373]

Although there is a wide range of explosions types, vapor cloud explosions are a primary concern in the petrochemical industry. Because there are no codes or industry standards for determining what blast overpressures should be used, the design blast loads are usually supplied by the facility owner. Considering the wide variety of processes, it is easy to understand why these overpressures will be different from one owner to the next and even for different locations within a single facility. Sonic owners have several hazard levels which are used to classify different plant arcas. These hazard levels are based on the material handled and the process used. [Pg.151]

The Ter Meer reaction has not been widely exploited for the synthesis of m-dinitroaliphatic compounds. This is partly because the Kaplan-Shechter oxidative nitration (Section 1.7) is more convenient, but also because of some more serious limitations. The first is the inability to synthesize internal em-dinitroaliphatic compounds functionality which shows high chemical stability and is found in many cyclic and caged energetic materials. Secondly, the em-nitronitronate salts formed in the Ter Meer reactions often need to be isolated to improve the yield and purity of the product. Dry em-nitronitronate salts are hazardous to handle and those from nitroalkanes like 1,1,4,4-tetranitrobutane are primary explosives which can explode even when wet. Even so, it is common to use conditions that lead to the precipitation of gem-nitronitronate salts from solution, a process that both drives the reaction to completion and also provides isolation and purification of the product salt by simple filtration. Purification of em-nitronitronate salts by filtration from the reaction liquors, followed by washing with methanol or ethanol to remove occluded impurities, has been used, although these salts should never be allowed to completely dry. [Pg.12]

This chapter is organized into three main sections providing discussions on the chemistry of fire and explosion, and the chemistry of hazardous materials. The last section of this chapter provides the reader with an extensive glossary of technical terms dealing with chemical hazards and hazard materials handling. [Pg.153]

Sound practice dictates that storage tanks and process vessels containing hazardous chemicals be properly designed and used only for their intended purpose. They should also have, as a minimum, overflow alarms. Once these conditions are met, it remains to ensure the structural soundness of the containers, to enforce proper hazardous materials handling procedures, and to construct and maintain secondary containment and collection facilities (Shields 1980). [Pg.113]
