Hairy

A unique but widely studied polymeric LB system are the polyglutamates or hairy rod polymers. These polymers have a hydrophilic rod of helical polyglutamate with hydrophobic alkyl side chains. Their rigidity and amphiphilic-ity imparts order (lyotropic and thermotropic) in LB films and they take on a F-type stmcture such as that illustrated in Fig. XV-16 [182]. These LB films are useful for waveguides, photoresists, and chemical sensors. LB films of these polymers are very thermally stable, as was indicated by the lack of interdiffusion up to 414 K shown by neutron reflectivity of alternating hydrogenated and deuterated layers [183]. AFM measurements have shown that these films take on different stmctures if directly deposited onto silicon or onto LB films of cadmium arachidate [184]. [Pg.561]

Interferons (lENs) (52,53), a family of species-specific vertebrate proteins, confer nonspecific resistance to a broad range of viral infections, affect cell proliferation, and modulate immune responses. AH three principal interferons, a-interferon (lEN-a) produced by blood leucocytes, P-interferon (lEN-P) by fibroblasts, and y-interferon (lEN-y) by lymphocytes, also have antiviral activity. The abiUty of interferons to inhibit growth of transplantable and carcinogen-induced tumor led to research showing the direct antiproliferative and indirect immune-mediated antitumor activities (see Chemotherapeutics, anticancer). IENs have been found to be efficacious in certain malignancies and viral infections, eg, hairy cell leukemia (85% response) and basal cell carcinoma (86% response). Advanced hairy cell leukemia has shown rapid response to (59) with or without a-or P-interferon treatment (179—187). In addition, (59) affects interleukin-2 production, receptor expression on human T-ceUs, DNA repair synthesis, immunosuppression, natural killer cell activity, and cytokine production (188—194). [Pg.124]

A third type of problem, that is often mistakenly confused with dendrite formation, is due to the presence of a reaction-product layer upon the growth interface if the electrode and electrolyte are not stable in the presence of each other. Cytokines and biological response modifiers represent a broad class of therapeutic agents that modify the hosts response to cancer or cancer therapies. As many as 33 different interleukins are known and the list continues to grow IL-2 used in the treatment of kidney cancer is one example. Interferon alpha is used for chronic myelogenous leukeia, hairy cell leukaemia and Kaposi s sarcoma. Interferons are also used in the treatment of chronic infections such as viral hepatitis. Tumor necrosis factor (alpha), G/GM/M-CSF, and several other cellular factors are used in treatment of various cancers. Interferon alfacon-1 (Inferax ), interferon alfa-2b (IntronA ), and interferon alfa-2a (Roferon -A) are applied in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B and C and some malignancies, especially hairy cell leukemia.
