Hair care products preservatives

Benzyl alcohol, sodium benzoate, sorbic acid, and even sequestrants are used as adjuncts for the preservation of hair care products. For example, ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) is effective against pseudomonas and should be considered in systems where pseudomonas is a problem, but it should not be considered alone without the use of other preservatives.

In recent years, protein-based surfactants are finding some applications in personal care products due to their abilities to interact with skin and hair." A-acyl polypeptide condensates (protein derivatives) belong to the mild surfactant category with foaming performance inferior to alkyl sulfates, but they produce creamy lather and leave hair feeling soft and manageable. However, it appears that extra attention and care should be taken to ensure preservation of these protein derivatives due to compatibility with other anionic surfactants when present in shampoo formulations. 

Preservatives. The producers of professional hair cosmetics use the same preservatives as other producers for non-professional skin care products. 

Uses functions as a formaldehyde donor in herbicides, polymers, color photography, latex paints, floor waxes, cutting oils, adhesives, copying paper, inks as a preservative in cosmetic products active against fungi, yeasts, and bacteria. Products preserved are shampoos, skin-care products, hair conditioners, makeup, hair rinses, and cleanliness products...

Emulsions form the basis of skin and face care creams, salves and lotions, but are also used in manufacture of hair conditioners and treatment preparations, roll-on deodorants, shaving creams, sun protection preparations, after sun care products and some decorative cosmetic products. Emulsion are mixtures of water and oil phases, stabilized by emulsifiers, in which either water droplets are suspended in an oil phase (W/0 emulsion), or vice versa (0/W emulsion). Phase status has an important influence on the susceptibility of an emulsion to microbial proliferation, since preservatives and other supplements intended to act against the growth of such organisms often display an intrinsic preference for either the oil or aqueous phase, depending on their hydro- or lipophilic nature. 

Used in hair care (hair-growth liniments, antidandruff shampoos, etc.), foot care (e.g., athlete s foot) and skin care products (moisturizing, nourishing, and acne creams) for its antibacterial and antifungal activities and for its traditional skin-protective, wrinkle-removal, and moisture-preserving properties (etic zhou).
