A comprehensive approach to the quality assurance in NDT would combine both approaches. It creates and maintains conditions for the people protection, safe operation of objects and products and preservation of the environment. [Pg.956]

Adopting the view that any theory of aromaticity is also a theory of pericyclic reactions [19], we are now in a position to discuss pericyclic reactions in terms of phase change. Two reaction types are distinguished those that preserve the phase of the total electi onic wave-function - these are phase preserving reactions (p-type), and those in which the phase is inverted - these are phase inverting reactions (i-type). The fomier have an aromatic transition state, and the latter an antiaromatic one. The results of [28] may be applied to these systems. In distinction with the cyclic polyenes, the two basis wave functions need not be equivalent. The wave function of the reactants R) and the products P), respectively, can be used. The electronic wave function of the transition state may be represented by a linear combination of the electronic wave functions of the reactant and the product. Of the two possible combinations, the in-phase one [Eq. (11)] is phase preserving (p-type), while the out-of-phase one [Eq. (12)], is i-type (phase inverting), compare Eqs. (6) and (7). We have seen (Section I) that there are two types of loops that are phase inverting upon completing a round hip an i one and an ip one. A schematic representation of these loops is shown in Figure 10. The other two options, p and i p loops do not contain a conical intersection. Let us assume that A is the reactant, B the desired product, and C the third anchor. In an ip loop, any one of the three reaction may be the phase-inverting one, including the B C one. Thus, the A B reaction may be phase preserving, and still B may be attainable by a photochemical reaction. This is in apparent contradiction with predictions based on the Woodward-Hoffmann rules (see Section Vni). The different options are summarized in Figure 11. [Pg.347]

Zinc cyanide. Solutions of the reactants are prepared by dis solving 100 g. of technical sodium cyanide (97-98 per cent. NaCN) in 125 ml. of water and 150 g. of anhydrous zinc chloride in the minimum volume of 50 per cent, alcohol (1). The sodium cyanide solution is added rapidly, with agitation, to the zinc chloride solution. The precipitated zinc cyanide is filtered off at the pump, drained well, washed with alcohol and then with ether. It is dried in a desiccator or in an air bath at 50°, and preserved in a tightly stoppered bottle. The yield is almost quantitative and the zinc cyanide has a purity of 95-98 per cent. (2). It has been stated that highly purified zinc cyanide does not react in the Adams modification of the Gattermann reaction (compare Section IV,12l). The product, prepared by the above method is, however, highly satisfactory. Commercial zinc cyanide may also be used. [Pg.201]

If the iodide is deeply coloured, it may be decolourised with a little sodium bisulphite. A perfecUy colourless product can be obtained by distilling in the dark or in dilfusod light from a little silver powder. The iodide should be preserved in a bottle containing a short coil of copper wire made by wrapping coppor wire round a glass rod or tube. [Pg.287]

Benzaldehyde is easily oxidised by atmospheric oxygon giving, ultimately, benzoic acid. This auto-oxidation is considerably influenced by catalysts tiiose are considered to react with the unstable peroxide complexes which are the initial products of the oxidation. Catalysts which inhibit or retard auto-oxidation are termed anti-oxidants, and those that accelerate auto-oxidation are called pro-oxidants. Anti-oxidants find important applications in preserving many organic compounds, e.g., acrolein. For benzaldehyde, hydroquinone or catechol (considerably loss than U-1 per cent, is sufficient) are excellent anti-oxidants. [Pg.694]

Extraterrestrial dust particles can be proven to be nonterrestrial by a variety of methods, depending on the particle si2e. Unmelted particles have high helium. He, contents resulting from solar wind implantation. In 10-)J.m particles the concentration approaches l/(cm g) at STP and the He He ratio is close to the solar value. Unmelted particles also often contain preserved tracks of solar cosmic rays that are seen in the electron microscope as randomly oriented linear dislocations in crystals. Eor larger particles other cosmic ray irradiation products such as Mn, Al, and Be can be detected. Most IDPs can be confidently distinguished from terrestrial materials by composition. Typical particles have elemental compositions that match solar abundances for most elements. TypicaUy these have chondritic compositions, and in descending order of abundance are composed of O, Mg, Si, Ee, C, S, Al, Ca, Ni, Na, Cr, Mn, and Ti. [Pg.100]

Approximately 50—55% of the product from a coal-tar refinery is pitch and another 30% is creosote. The remaining 15—20% is the chemical oil, about half of which is naphthalene. Creosote is used as a feedstock for production of carbon black and as a wood preservative. Because of modifications to modem coking processes, tar acids such as phenol and cresyUc acids are contained in coal tar in lower quantity than in the past. To achieve economies of scale, these tar acids are removed from cmde coal tar with a caustic wash and sent to a central processing plant where materials from a number of refiners are combined for recovery. [Pg.162]

Citric acid is used in carbonated beverages to provide tartness, modify and enhance flavors, and chelate trace metals. It is often added to jams and jellies to control pH and provide tartness. It is used in cured and freeze-dried meat products to protect the amino acids (qv) and improve water retention. Bakers use it to improve the flavor of fmit fillings in baked goods. Because citric acid is a good chelator for trace metals, it is used as an antioxidant synergist in fats and oils, and as a preservative in frozen fish and shellfish (7) (see Antioxidaisits). [Pg.436]

Preservatives. Without control of yeasts (qv), molds, and bacteria, the food industry would experience considerable economic losses each year owing to spoilage. Sugar, salt, and wood smoke have been used for centuries to preserve food.
