Instead of acryloyl chloride or methacryloyl chloride, the glycidyl esters are used for functionalization with polymerizable compounds. Such a compound is 2-[2-hydroxy-4-alkoxy-(2-oxypropyl methacrylate)phenyl]-2H-4-methoxybenzotriazoIe, as shown in Figure 9.9. It is prepared by the reaction of 4-(5-methoxy-2H-benzotriazole-2-yl)resorcinol with glycidyl methacrylate. Tetrabutylammonium bromide is used as a catalyst and hy-droquinone is used as a polymerization inhibitor. [Pg.314]

Ahyl alcohol undergoes reactions typical of saturated, aUphatic alcohols. Ahyl compounds derived from ahyl alcohol and used industriahy, are widely manufactured by these reactions. For example, reactions of ahyl alcohol with acid anhydrides, esters, and acid chlorides yield ahyl esters, such as diahyl phthalates and ahyl methacrylate reaction with chloroformate yields carbonates, such as diethylene glycol bis(ahyl carbonate) addition of ahyl alcohol to epoxy groups yields products used to produce ahyl glycidyl ether (33,34). [Pg.74]

Several ester monomers have also been studied. In methanol solution, methyl acrylate (16,21), ethyl acrylate (21,54), 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate (55), allyl acrylate (44), glycidyl acrylate (56,57) usually in methanol solution, have been extensively studied. Methyl methacrylate (19, 21, 28, 30, 36, 39, 58) in diversified media composition, has been successfully grafted on polyamides. Vinyl acetate is reported also for grafting on polyamide backbone (19, 28, 35, 58), as well as n-butyl maleate in methanol solution (55). Diallyl maleate as cross-linking agent for polyamide chains is reported (44). Other less usual ester monomers have been mentioned in the literature to form grafts (41,59,60). [Pg.100]

Terpolymers made from two different olefins and CO are known. They were first described in Brubaker s initial patent and involved the free radical initiated terpolymerization of CO and C2H with another olefin such as propylene, isobutylene, butadiene, vinyl acetate, diethyl maleate or tetrafluoroethylene More recently, in another patent, Hammer has described the free radical initiated terpolymerization of CO and C2H with vinyl esters, vinyl ethers or methyl methacrylate 26Reaction temperatures of 180-200 °C and a combined pressure of 186 MPa were employed. Typically a CO QH4 olefin molar ratio of 10 65 25 was observed in the terpolymers. In other patents, Hammer 27,28) has described the formation of copolymers with pendant epoxy groups by the free radical initiated polymerization of CO, QH4, vinyl acetate and glycidyl methacrylate. Reaction conditions similar to those stated above were employed, and a typical CO C2H vinyl acetate glycidyl methacrylate molar ratio of 10 65 20 5 was observed in the product polymer. [Pg.130]

Cold curing unsaturated resin was obtained in the following way. A mixture of BPA, BPA monocyanate and BPA dicyanate was cyclotrimerized and reacted with BMI. The obtained prepolymer with phenolic hydroxyls (cf. Scheme 9) was then treated with epichlorohydrin and alkali. The phenolic hydroxyls were thus transformed into glycidyl ether groups. Then the addition of methacrylic acid to the epoxy groups was carried out. The obtained vinyl ester (epoxyacrylate) type resin was dissolved in styrene and cured with the usual benzoyl peroxide/dimethylaniline system [131],... [Pg.56]

Methacrylates containing a functional group in the ester, such as allyl methacrylate and glycidyl methacrylate, can be directly polymerized by GTP , which is advantageous because no protection of the functional group is needed prior to polymerization. [Pg.862]

Unsaturated polyesters having hydroxyl groups can be prepared by the reaction of glycols, maleic anhydride and dicarboxylic acids in more than the stoichiometric amount of glycols/carboxylic acids (13, 34). Edwards discussed the application of isophthalic unsaturated polyester urethane hybrids in conventional molding techniques (13). He also applied the hybrids to foamed products (21). Vinyl esters can be prepared by the reaction of bisphenol A with glycidyl methacrylate (21). [Pg.165]

The use of monomethacrylates in anaerobic formulations was disclosed in a patent assigned to Loctite. Specifically mentioned were hydroxyethyl (XIX), hydroxypropyl (XX), cyclohexyl (XXI), tetrahydrofurfuryl (XXII), dimethylaminoethyl (XXIII), and glycidyl methacrylates (XXIV), and cyanoethyl acrylate [26]. Methacrylate esters containing residual carboxylic add groups were prepared by the reaction of hydroxyethyl methacrylate with phthalic anhydride (XXV), pyromellitic dianhydride (XXVI), and benzophenonetetracarboxylic add dianhydride (XXVII). The residual acid provided improved adhesion [27,28]. The reaction product of hydroxyalkylmethacrylates with maleic anhydride (XXVIII) also produced monomers with residual acid as well as additional curable unsaturation [29]. The dimethacrylates of the bisglycol esters of dicarboxylic adds were used to formulate anaerobic adhesives. Among the dicarboxylic acids mentioned were phthalic (XXIX), maleic (XXX), fumaric (XXXI), and malonic (XXXII) [30]. [Pg.754]

Methacrylate esters have been prepared by the reaction of methacrylic acid with epoxies such as the diglycidyl ethers of bisphenol A (XXXVII) [37]. Methacrylate esters suitable for anaerobic adhesives have also been prepared by the reaction of glycidyl methacrylate (XXXVIII) with a hydroxyl-terminated polyester [38]. The reaction of isocyanatoethyl methacrylate (XXXIX) with polyols resulted in monomers that could be formulated into anaerobic adhesives and sealants [39]. [Pg.754]

Within the different types of epoxies, are found epoxy diacrylates or vinyl ester resins, used to produce specific corrosion and chemical resistant composite systems. Vinyl ester resins are produced by either reacting epoxy resins of glycidyl derivatives with methacrylic acid, or from BPA and glycidyl methacrylates, where an active monomer (usually styrene) as crosslinker, hardener (usually organic peroxides), accelerators (cobalt) are added to the system. In the thermoset epoxy systems, there are also the mould releasers , which can be either internal such as, lecithin, or stearates of zinc and calcium, certain organic phosphates that are mixed in the resin, or, external - such as, fluorocarbons, silicone oil, and certain waxes, that are directly laid on the mould. [Pg.93]
