Future trends and development

As the years progress, so the pace of new technological development seems to follow an exponential curve. It is impossible to predict all the changes that will occur, even in the near future, so we have selected four which we feel will have a significant impact on the work of pesticide residue analysts over the next 1-2 decades.

Future Developments and Trends in Inorganic Mass Spectrometry... 

Organic electronics has great potential and roadmapping future developments and trends is an ongoing task and key activity of the OE-A and its members. The next update of the roadmap was published in June 2009 at OE-A s annual conference and exhibition LOPE-C - Large-area, Organic and Printed Electronics Convention. 

For a manufacturer the difficulty is to estimate future developments or trends in NMR microscopy. Based on dedicated laboratory-made hardware developed by the NMR microscopy users and on their requests for new commercial hardware and software, the following topics could become more important micro-coil applications, multiple receiver systems and multi-coil arrangements, NMR microscopy at very high magnetic fields, MAS imaging and localized 1H MAS spectroscopy and localized single-shot 2D spectroscopy. There are no clear-cut distinctions between most of the individual topics, as will be discussed in the following sections.

As a record of this successful Conference, all papers (after revision) presented to the Symposium and the discussions during the meeting are now published in these Proceedings. In addition, the contributions shortly after the Conference in projecting future trends of adhesive research are also included. As a result, the new title for the volume becomes "Adhesive Chemistry - Developments and Trends." The six parts following the original order of the Conference are ... 

There are several recognizable trends and avenues in the future development and application of hydrocyclones the recent international conferences on the subject have served as a good indicator in this respect. The following is a list of the author s main conclusions, and it necessarily represents a personal view.

Two additional projects, being developed with private funding for specific market applications, are appropriate to consider as representatives of future directions and trends. These two projects are the LFR-AS-200 project being developed by Hydromine, Inc., and the Swedish Advanced Lead Reactor (SEALER) reactor project being developed by LeadCold Reactors Inc. The descriptions below are based on private communications for these ongoing development efforts and are intended to illustrate the continuing process of innovation that is characteristic of current and future trends in LFR technology. 

The recent development and comparative application of modern separation techniques with regard to determination of alkylphosphonic acids and lewisite derivatives have been demonstrated. This report highlights advantages and shortcomings of GC equipped with mass spectrometry detector and HPLC as well as CE with UV-Vis detector. The comparison was made from the sampling point of view and separation/detection ability. The derivatization procedure for GC of main degradation products of nerve agents to determine in water samples was applied. Direct determination of lewisite derivatives by HPLC-UV was shown. Also optimization of indirect determination of alkylphosphonic acids in CE-UV was developed. Finally, the new instrumental development and future trends will be discussed. 

Estimates of urban NOx emissions and trends are generally limited to those provided by the developed countries which have the detailed emission Inventories. As In the case of other pollutants, the USA contributes the most on a per-country basis to the global NOx emissions per year. Because of the Inaccuracy of the data base used. It Is difficult to discern trends In these emissions. However, with new control technologies being Implemented for both stationary and mobile sources, downward trends In the developed countries may be more prevalent In the future years. Unfortunately, the opposite trend Is likely to occur In the developing countries. 

The salient features of the recent development and future trends in all areas of tire technology, i.e., materials, technology, and manufacmring, wiU be covered in the following sections. 

In preceding chapters we have indicated which tools are nowadays being used routinely or currently are under development. General trends are higher sensitivity, more information, and faster and further automation. Automatic analyses are nice (sample in, report out), but interactive analysis tools are better. It is not realistic to expect the need for more analyses. Some future needs are more reliable quantitation, reference materials and simplification of data management. A particular problem in additive analysis concerns accuracy and traceability. In many cases, extractable rather than total concentration is determined. There are still many quantitative analytical methods waiting to be developed. It is here that the field will advance. Table 10.31 lists some proposed (r)evolutionary developments in polymer/additive analysis.

A third path for research is to study associations between system change and improvement, on the one hand, and public and consumer responses, on the other. In particular, what are the conditions for the development and maintenance of trustworthiness and satisfaction through organisational and communicative procedures With better knowledge of consumer demands and improved quantification of risks and benefits to health, the future trend is likely to point towards increased differentiation, with different products targeting consumer groups with different priorities. Some consumers will demand more convenience, while others will invest in participatory community farm schemes that allow direct involvement in the production and preparation of their food. 

Ukraine s Y. Maletin et al. presented a comprehensive overview describing state of the art as well as future development trends in supercapacitors, as the fifth paper in this chapter. The authors establish key performance bars for supecapacitors upon meeting those, supercapacitors may start to compete with batteries. Also, this paper highlights so-called hybrid applications where supercapacitors complement operation of batteries and/or fuel cells. Optimization of supercapacitor performance through varying electrode thickness is contemplated in length.
