It is recognised that vitreous enamel possesses good acid resistance, but an exception occurs with hydrofluoric acid. This is due to the relative ease of reaction between this acid and the silica (which is the largest constituent in the frit) to form silicon tetrafluoride. This reaction is made use of in some de-enamelling plants. [Pg.742]

The introduction of divalent calcium and barium oxides into frits in preference to monovalent sodium and potassium generally increases water resistance. Furthermore, oxides of tetravalent and pentavalent metals have a favourable effect on the resistance of glasses and enamels to water. The influence of B2O3 and fluorine in the frit upon chemical resistance is variable and is dependent upon the content of them and the balance of the frit constituents, but they usually cause a diminution in resistance. In general, mill-added clay, silica and opaciher increase water resistance provided the firing or fusing of the enamel is at the optimum. [Pg.743]

This operation is the separation of the precipitate from the mother liquor, the object being to get the precipitate and the filtering medium quantitatively free from the solution. The media employed for filtration are (1) filter paper (2) porous fritted plates of resistance glass, e.g. Pyrex (sintered-glass filtering crucibles), of silica (Vitreosil filtering crucibles), or of porcelain (porcelain filtering crucibles) see Section 3.24. [Pg.115]

Version (b) has a four-channel flow guidance that encompasses two mixing tees in two simple mixing tees (Figure 4.5) [8]. An example of this function is the flow guidance for the Michael addition. In a first step, the base and 1,3-dicarbonyl compound streams merge. The enolate stream thus formed is then mixed with the Michael acceptor. Microporous silica frits are set into the channels to minimize... [Pg.383]

The titanosilicate version of UTD-1 has been shown to be an effective catalyst for the oxidation of alkanes, alkenes, and alcohols (77-79) by using peroxides as the oxidant. The large pores of Ti-UTD-1 readily accommodate large molecules such as 2,6-di-ferf-butylphenol (2,6-DTBP). The bulky 2,6-DTBP substrate can be converted to the corresponding quinone with activity and selectivity comparable to the mesoporous catalysts Ti-MCM-41 and Ti-HMS (80), where HMS = hexagonal mesoporous silica. Both Ti-UTD-1 and UTD-1 have also been prepared as oriented thin films via a laser ablation technique (81-85). Continuous UTD-1 membranes with the channels oriented normal to the substrate surface have been employed in a catalytic oxidation-separation process (82). At room temperature, a cyclohexene-ferf-butylhydroperoxide was passed through the membrane and epoxidation products were trapped on the down stream side. The UTD-1 membranes supported on metal frits have also been evaluated for the separation of linear paraffins and aromatics (83). In a model separation of n-hexane and toluene, enhanced permeation of the linear alkane was observed. Oriented UTD-1 films have also been evenly coated on small 3D objects such as glass and metal beads (84, 85). [Pg.234]

Preparing the outlet end-frit at the desired distance from the column end by sintering the silica beads using heating to a temperature of over 550 °C. [Pg.15]

Chirica and Remcho first created the outlet frit, packed the column with ODS beads, and then fabricated the inlet frit. The column was filled with aqueous solution of a silicate (Kasil) and the entrapment achieved by heating the column to 160 °C [105,106]. The monolithic column afforded considerably reduced retention times compared to the packed-only counterpart most likely due to a partial blocking of the pores with the silicate solution. This approach was recently extended to the immobilization of silica beads in a porous organic polymer matrix [107]. [Pg.28]

Indium also has many of the characteristics that make Al and Ga very useful for such applications. Particularly important is its capacity to dissolve Si, Ge and several lanthanide and transition metals, producing highly reactive forms of the elements. Moreover In does not form binaries with Si and Ge and has a low-melting point. RNiGe2 compounds, for instance, were prepared from stoichiometric quantities of the components in fine powder mixed with a 10 fold quantity of In in alumina tubes. These, flame sealed in fused silica tubes, were slowly heated to 1000°C, held at this temperature for a few hours, ramped down to 850°C, held for an additional 4 days and finally cooled down to room temperature over the course of another 4 days. Compound isolation from the In excess was performed by centrifugation at 300°C through a coarse frit. Further purification was carried out by a 15-minute submersion and sonication in 6 M aqueous HC1 (Salvador et al. 2004). [Pg.579]

An adapter tube containing a fritted disc prevents loss of silica gel into the condenser of the rotary evaporator. These tubes are available from Aldrich Chemical Company, Inc. Alternatively, the checkers found that the silica gel can be added to the crude mixture after removal of benzene. [Pg.111]
