Mixing with powders

Metal Incendiaries. Metal incendiaries include those of magnesium in various forms, and powdered or granular aluminum mixed with powdered iron(III) oxide. Magnesium is a soft metal which, when raised to its ignition temperature, bums vigorously in air. It is used in either soHd or powdered form as an incendiary filling, and in alloyed form as the casing for small incendiary bombs. 

The second analytical method uses a combustion system (O Neil et al. 1994) in place of reaction with BrF,. This method was used for the crocodiles because they were represented by very thin caps of enamel. The enamel was powdered and sieved (20 mg), pretreated in NaOCl to oxidize organic material and then precipitated as silver phosphate. Approximately 10-20 mg of silver phosphate were mixed with powdered graphite in quartz tubes, evacuated and sealed. Combustion at 1,200°C was followed by rapid cooling in water which prevents isotopic fractionation between the CO2 produced and the residual solid in the tube. Analyses of separate aliquots from the same sample typically showed precisions of 0.1%o to 0.4%o with 2 to 4 repetitive analyses even though yields are on the order of 25%. 

The experiments were intended to clarify the question as to whether transmission of spores from Mars to Earth could be feasible. To do this, a Mars meteorite was simulated, i.e., the spores were mixed with powdered rock and the mixture pressed together to give a small cube about 1 cm3 in size. The spore concentration was about the same as in normal soil on Earth. The samples were in orbit for around 2 weeks, and their survival ability was determined on their return to Earth, compared with the corresponding samples which had been left on Earth (control experiment). 

As mentioned earlier, chlorates are also a major ingredient in various pyrotechnic formulations. Typically potassium chlorate is utilized in this capacity due to the more hygroscopic nature of the sodium analog. Graphite has found application ini the prepn of Tetryl pellets. In this case, a small quantiry of powdered graphite is mixed with powdered Tetryl and the mass is pelleted.

Anhydrous tetrahydrofuran from Matheson, Coleman and Bell Chemical Company was used for the reactions. Freshly opened bottles gave no effervescence when mixed with powdered calcium hydride. Some aluminosilicate minerals appear to meet the above criteria rather well, especially with regard to low leachability and chemical and physical stability 1, 2). A low-temperature process for converting the wastes to aluminosilicates with low leachability has now been found (3). Aqueous waste solutions containing NaOH, NaNOa, NaN02, NaAl02, mixed fission products, and minor amounts of other salts are mixed with powdered clays (kaolin, bentonite, halloysite, or dickite) and allowed to react at 30°-100°C to form small crystals of the mineral cancrinite.
