Salts of Formaldehyde-Naphthalene Sulfonate Although it was the first WRA referred to in the literature, it has been used in major applications only since the early 1970s. The material is obtained by oleum or sulfur trioxide sulfonation of naphthalene. The reaction of the product results in polymerisation [26]. If the material obtained is of low polymerisation, it does not result in air-entrainment. However, if they are of high molecular weight they do not result in air-entrainment.

The sodium salts of the condensation products of naphthalenesulfonic acid with formaldehyde constitute an important class of compounds which are mainly used in the area of concrete additives (32,33), agricultural formulations, mbber formulations, and synthetic tanning agents. For aqueous cement slurries a copolymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone and a salt of styrenesulfonic acid has been proposed [1585]. A naphthalene sulfonic acid salt condensed with formaldehyde serves as a dispersant. 

The earliest known published reference to the use of small amounts of organic materials to increase the fluidity of cement containing compositions, was made in 1932 [1] where polymerized naphthalene formaldehyde sulfonate salts were claimed as useful in this role. This was followed during the mid 1930s to early 1940s by numerous disclosures regarding the use of lignosulfonates and improved compositions [2-9].

The monomer solution makeup involves addition and solubilization of elemental sulfur and rosin (substituted diterpenes) in the chloroprene monomer. The water solution is made in a second vessel. Deionized water, sodium hydroxide, and a dispersant are mixed to form the water solution. The dispersant is a condensation product of naphthalene-sulfonic acid and formaldehyde. The monomer and water solutions are mixed with centrifiigal pumps to form an oil-in-water emulsion. The emulsion formed by virtue of formation of the sodiiun salt of rosin and resin components (abietic and dehydroabietic acids) having hydrophobic and hydrophilic ends. The large carbon-bearing portion of sodium abietate is hydrophobic and thereby solubilizes the monomer. The sodium carboxylate portion of sodium abietate is the hydrophilic end that extends into the aqueous phase and forms the electronic double layer that is critical to emulsion stability (84,85). In the patent example, the emulsion was added to the reactor and the temperatiu-e was increased to 40°C polymerization temperatiu-e (Table 3). 

The polyacrylic elastomers were prepared by emulsion polymerization. The monomers, water, emulsifiers (i.e., sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium salt of polymerized naphthalene sulfonic acid), tetrasodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate, and sodium ferric salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid were charged to the reactor vessel equipped with an agitator. The temperature of the reactor vessel was controlled at 10 C. The reactor was evacuated to remove air, closed and the emulsion agitated. Sodium sulfate, sodium formaldehyde sulfoxylate and paramenthane hydroperoxide were then charged to the reactor. The reaction time was 12 hours. The conversions to copolymers were 93 - 97% (Table 1). 

Anionic fixatives, e. g., the sodium salt of condensation products of formaldehyde and naphthalene sulfonic add, also form color lakes of this type with cationic dyes. They are used to improve the fixation of basic dyes on bleached pulps that contain only small amounts of hgnin. Better dye fixation always results in richer colors, improved bleed fastness, and less effluent staining.

Homopolymers and copolymers from amido-sulfonic acid or salt containing monomers can be prepared by reactive extrusion, preferably in a twin screw extruder [1660]. The process produces a solid polymer. Copolymers of acrylamide, N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone, and sodium-2-acrylamido-2-methyl-propane sulfonate have been proposed to be active as fluid loss agents. Another component of the formulations is the sodium salt of naphthalene formaldehyde sulfonate [207]. The fluid loss additive is mixed with hydraulic cements in suitable amounts. 

A fluid loss additive useful in cementing oil and gas wells is a blend [423,424,1015] of a copolymer of acrylamide/vinyl imidazole. The second component in the blend is a copolymer of vinylpyrrolidone and the sodium salt of vinyl sulfonate. Details are given in Table 2-2. The copolymers are mixed together in the range of 20 80 to 80 20. Sodium or potassium salts or a sulfonated naphthalene formaldehyde condensate can be used as a dispersant.
