Kuhni contacters (Eig. 15e) have gained considerable commercial application. The principal features are the use of a shrouded impeller to promote radial discharge within the compartments, and a variable hole arrangement to allow flexibility of design for different process applications. Columns up to 5 m in diameter have been constmcted (176). Description and design criteria for Kuhni extraction columns have been reported (177,178). [Pg.76]

Flexible Impeller Pumps. Flexible impeller pumps are designed for general-use service. They can be utilized for pumping in either direction, have low pulsations, and are easy to service and maintain. These pumps are typically limited to low capacities and pressures. [Pg.296]

Slotted beam or U-contacts describe a versatile design for the termination of soHd wire and require that the wire be pushed into a narrow slot between two moderately rigid tines, or beams, at the back end of the separable contact (Fig. 8). The edges of the beams displace the insulation, squee2e the wire, and keep it in compression for the life of the connection. This termination method was developed for terminating conductors in a gang using flexible flat cables with round conductors (5). [Pg.26]

The principal advantage of self-induced spray scrubbers is the efim-ination of a pump for recirculation of the scrubbing liquid. However, the designs for high-energy service are somewhat more complex and less flexible than those for venturi scrubbers. [Pg.1594]

Vacuum systems are typically used when flows do not exceed 6800 kg/h (15,000 Ib/h), the equivalent conveyor length is less than 305 m (1000 ft), and several points are to be supplied from one source. They are widely used for finely divided materi s. Of special interest are vacuum systems designed for flows under 7.6 kg/min (1000 Ib/h), used to transfer materials short distances from storage bins or bulk containers to process units. This type of conveyor is widely used in plastics and other processing operations where the variety of conditions requires flexibility in choosing pickup devices, power sources, and receivers. Capital investment can be kept low, often in the range of 2000 to 7000. [Pg.1928]

Flowever, motor manufacturers may adopt more flexible designs with more reserve capacity and better speed-torque characteristics to suit the requirements of a particular sector. These are particularly for installations where the distribution system may have wider voltage fluctuations or the load itself may have varying load demands. It is possible that the same motor may have to drive more than one type of loads at different times. An agricultural pump motor may be one such application where it may also have to drive a thrasher or a winnower at different times. A motor with higher flexibility would be more desirable for such applications. [Pg.37]

As w as mentioned earlier, extra rows are provided as can be seen in Figure 1. This gives extra flexibility needed for process design case studies. Often, the set of case studies initially envisioned by the engineer or manager are not sufficient to answer all questions. The extra rows allow intermediate recycles or intermediate flows from or additions to the plant that might not have been envisioned initially. Another value of the intermediate rows is to provide component values at intermediate points in the process. The breakeven value of a proposed purchase stream from another plant would be one use of intermediate component values. [Pg.349]

Flexible tubing for high pressure service, equipped with stainless steel overbraid plus tube adapter end connections, is commonly available with a carbon black-loaded PTFE core tube to dissipate static. Numerous other designs of conductive and antistatic tubing are available for low pressure applications. The utility of conductive tubing in preventing fires during transfer of aromatic hydrocarbon liquids is described in [165]. [Pg.114]

Flexibility most flexible of tray designs for high and low vapor and liquid rates. Allows positive drain of liquid from tray. Liquid heads maintained by weirs. [Pg.122]

In general, only the reciprocating compressor allows for reliable flexibility in applying variable volumetric flowrate and variable pressure ratio in an operation. The rotary compressor does not allow for variation in either (except that of pressure through the decompression of the air or gas if the system back pressure is below the design pressure of the machine). The dynamic compressors are designed for specific volumetric flowrates and pressure ratios and are not very useful when these design limits are altered. [Pg.479]

Rail tank cars have bottom outlets terminating in a quick-acting coupling, and are designed for pump off-loading only. A flow indicator should be inserted between the terminal outlet and the fill line. Flexible connections for steam and oil lines should be provided for the maximum number of cars that will be discharged simultaneously. [Pg.250]

Control of emissions of CO, VOC, and NOj, is high on the agenda. Heterogeneous catalysis plays a key role and in most cases structured reactors, in particular monoliths, outperform packed beds because of (i) low pressure drop, (ii) flexibility in design for fast reactions, that is, thin catalytic layers with large geometric surface area are optimal, and (iii) attrition resistance [17]. For power plants the large flow... [Pg.191]
