The mean deviation from experiment the average difference between computed and experimental values. This statistic is not very meanin since it allows positive and negative errors—underestimations overestimations—to cancel one another. Flowever, a large value usi indicates the presence of systematic errors.

A multiwavelength approach might have been considered as an alternative to chemical derivatisation. Ruddle and Wilson [62] reported UV characterisation of PE extracts of three antioxidants (Topanol OC, Ionox 330 and Binox M), all with identical UV spectra and 7max = 277 nm, after reaction with nickel peroxide in alkaline ethanolic solutions, to induce marked differentiation in different solvents and allow positive identification. Nonionic surfactants of the type R0(CH2CH20) H were determined by UV spectrophotometry after derivatisation with tetrabromophenolphthalein ethyl ester potassium salt [34]. Magill and Becker [63] have described a rapid and sensitive spectrophotometric method to quantitate the peroxides present in the surfactants sorbitan monooleate and monostearate. The method, which relies on the peroxide conversion of iodide to iodine, works also for Polysorbate 60 and other surfactants and is more accurate than a titrimetric assay. 

The mechanism of the slow-wave potential is unclear. One hypothesis is that the rate at which sodium ions are actively transported out of the cell rhythmically increases and decreases. A decrease in the outward movement of Na+ ions allows positive charges to accumulate along the internal surface of the cell membrane and depolarization takes place. This is followed by an increase in the outward movement of Na+ ions, which causes the internal surface of the cell membrane to become more negative, and repolarization takes place. 

This reaction sequence was definitively shown by use of temperature programmed reaction spectroscopy ( 7) The key to the success of this method was that reaction (4) was the rate-limiting step, allowing positive identification of the CH30(a) intermediate by TPRS. Isotopic substitution with b0 and deuterium was used to identify steps (2) and (3). 

When the defining set is small, there is an inadequate representation of the range of allowed positional variation in terms of either amino acid frequencies or types. Pseudo counts have been used for estimates of such unobserved data (Brown et al., 1993 Lawrence et al., 1993 Claverie, 1994 Tatusov et al., 1994 Henikoff and Henikoff, 1996 Sjo-lander et al., 1996). Such pseudo counts have been based on background frequencies, existing substitution matrices (Henikoff and Henikoff, 1992), and Dirichlet priors (Brown et al., 1993 Tatusov et al., 1994 Sjolander et al., 1996). The i>3 Region. This mode will be ir-active for a linear or bent M-H-M array. Accordingly, low temperature spectra for all 12 combinations of Et4N+ and PPN+ with hydrido- and deuterio-bridged Cr, Mo, and W anions were examined. The ideal speciation procedure is one which allows positive identification and quantitative evaluation of one particular species. Some of the better known approaches are summarised in Table 2.1. Techniques (usually spectroscopic) which have been used to identify and determine directly a particular chemical species in biological samples, are summarised in Table 2.2 and the topic of Direct Methods of Metal Speciation is dealt with in Chapter 3.

A lateral approach allows positive overlaps, so the reaction is allowed. As the reaction progresses, the carbene rotates (see arrows). 

The evolution was carried out in two stages. First, colonies were screened for activity-suppressed mutants (those with no detectable clear zone). These were then taken on to the next round of mutagenesis, and the resulting mutant library was screened for mutants with restored activity. This approach reduced the background of variants with wild-type levels of activity, allowing positive mutations to be identified more easily.

A time-of-flight (TOF) analyzer allows positively charged peptides to fly through a vacuum tube toward a negatively charged detector source, so that the time of flight can be calibrated in proportion to peptide mass. Typically, the longer the vacuum tube, the more accurate the mass will be because of increased resolution. 

Furnish the maximum structural information possible, at best to allow positive identification of all the eluted compounds.
