Adhesive Transfer Processes. Many polymers, whether dehberately or accidentally, are adhesives, so that much of the adhesive industry can be regarded as a part of the mbber and plastics industry. However, there are several important material-transfer appHcations involving polymer products that are so critically dependent on controlled adhesion that they merit specific mention in that category. Equipment Suite An equipment suite is the collection of equipment available for producing a group of products. Normally, this group of products is similar in certain respects. For example, they might all be manufactured from the same major raw materials. Within the equipment suite, material transfer and metering capabilities are available for these raw materials. All operations take place simultaneously in different stations. Sixteen stations were commonly used in earlier machines with outputs between 500 and 1000 TPM and tablet diameters up to 15 mm. Presses with outputs orders of magnitude greater than the above are now widely available. The dies are filled as they pass beneath a stationary feed frame, which may be fitted with paddles to aid material transfer. The die cavities are completely filled and excess ejected prior to compression. Compression involves the movement of both punches between compression rolls, in contrast to single station operations where only the upper punch effects compression. Ejection occurs as both punches are moved away from the die on cam tracks until the tablet is completely clear of the die, at which point it hits the edge of the feed frame and is knocked off the press. Tooling pressure may be exerted hydraulically, rather than through the use of mechanical camming actions, as is the case with machines produced by Courtoy. [Pg.318]

Production schedules for batch processes can be sequential, overlapping, parallel, use intermediate storage, or use a combination of these. Such schedules can be analyzed using Gantt charts. Batch processes often produce multiple products in the same equipment and can be distinguished as flowshop or multiproduct plants. Equipment cleaning and material transfer policy have a significant effect on the production schedule. [Pg.313]
