In a study of dental silicate cements, Kent, Fletcher Wilson (1970) used electron probe analysis to study the fully set material. Their method of sample preparation varied slightly from the general one described above, in that they embedded their set cement in epoxy resin, polished the surface to flatness, and then coated it with a 2-nm carbon layer to provide electrical conductivity. They analysed the various areas of the cement for calcium, silicon, aluminium and phosphorus, and found that the cement comprised a matrix containing phosphorus, aluminium and calcium, but not silicon. The aluminosilicate glass was assumed to develop into a gel which was relatively depleted in calcium.

Fletcher et al. [123] used a sensitive and specific gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method for the assay of primaquine in plasma and urine for studying the plasma kinetics. Preliminary studies on the effects of single and multiple oral doses were carried out. In both cases, the drug was completely removed from plasma in 24 h. The concentration of primaquine in plasma usually reached a peak 1-2 h after oral administration. The plasma elimination half-life was about 4 h.

Numerous studies have addressed the relative importance of different senses in modulating behavior. Mating behavior of domestic sheep is an example. Rams use mostly vision for sexual activity but smell for seeking the partner. Odors are important for distinguishing estrous from non-estrous ewes. In ewes, blindfolding interfered with seeking rams (Fletcher and Lindsay, 1968).

Honeyman147 reported the synthesis of methyl 2,3-anhydro-/3-L-lyxopyranoside, and claimed that, on alkaline hydrolysis, this gives a 2 1 ratio of L-xyloside L-arabinoside, but these results could not be substantiated by Buchanan and R. Fletcher,68 who recorded different constants for the epoxide and for the disulfonic ester claimed147 to be the starting material for its synthesis. The chlorine atom cage effect was used as a highly sensitive probe for studying the effect of viscosity and the possible role of solvent clusters on cage lifetimes and reactivity for reactions carried out in supercritical fluid solvents. The results of these experiments provide no indication of an enhanced cage effect near the critical point in SC-CO2 solvent. The magnitude of the cage effect observed in SC-CO2 at all pressures examined is well within what is anticipated on the basis of extrapolations from conventional solvents (Fletcher et al., 1998).
