Film-forming agents, paints

Smaller factories generally buy in their film-forming materials and if necessary convert them into solutions. The major paint companies, on the other hand, produce considerable amounts of the film formers (resins) themselves and are therefore able to develop tailor-made film-forming agents that are optimized to the formulations, production conditions, application technique, and intended use of the resulting coating composition. Such companies can supply special, high-quality products. [Pg.178]

Resins or binders are the film-forming agents in paints. The resin hardens and keeps the pigments bound and permanently dispersed on the painted surface. The binder dictates the most important properties of the paint, such as hardness, flexibility and speed of drying. Examples of resins used in paints and coatings are given in Table 2. (Mathias 1984 Rose and Vance 1997). [Pg.663]

The resin component is also known as the vehicle or binder, but resin component is more descriptive. The resin is the film-forming agent of the paint. It forms the matrix of the coating, the continuous polymeric phase in which all other components may be incorporated. Its density and composition largely determine the permeability, corrosion resistance, and UV resistance of the coating. [Pg.97]

The role of the vehicle in paint is to form an adhesive film over the pigment granules that is optically clear, glossy (reflective) or matte (diffusely reflective) as desired, and protective. In this section, the term biitder is used collectively to represent all similar compounds and components. Because of their function, binders may be referred to as film-forming agents, and they function in concert with the solvent system. Film formation, or curing, occurs by several mechanisms ... [Pg.501]

Coagulation One process by which film-forming agents in paints and inks create a protective polymer coating latex paints work this way. [Pg.617]

Film-forming agent A binder or resin that pol5nnerizes and protects a colorant in a paint or ink. [Pg.620]

Polymer Dispersions (Emulsion Polymers). Waterborne paints based on polymer dispersions (usually referred to as emulsion paints) are not water soluble. They are water-thinnable systems composed of dispersions of polymer particles in water (see Section 3.5). The particles consist of high molecular mass polymers (e.g., of styrene, butadiene, acrylate, or vinyl monomers) and are produced by emulsion polymerization. These waterborne paints also contain small amounts of organic solvents (< 5 wt %) that serve as film-forming (coalescing) agents that partially evaporate on drying. [Pg.112]

Auxiliary solvents and film-forming auxiliaries are also used as flow promoting agents in aqueous dispersions (emulsion paints). Propylene glycol acts not only as a solvent, but is hygroscopic and thus ensures a sufficiently high water content in the coating until a smooth surface has formed. [Pg.321]
