Correct application of this principle can lead to what would appear to he peculiar recommendations. For example, if just one member of a couple is to be coated, it should be the noble member. A note of caution about roof fasteners. A common mistake is to fix a galvanised or aluminium roof in place with nails or screws of a different metal copper or brass, for instance. The copper acts as cathode, and the zinc or aluminium corrodes away rapidly near to the fastening. A similar sort of goof has been known to occur when copper roofing sheet has been secured with steel nails. As Fig. 24.6 shows, this sort of situation leads to catastrophically rapid corrosion not only because the iron is anodic, but because it is so easy for the electrons generated by the anodic corrosion to get away to the large copper cathode. [Pg.236]

Repair. Repairs for damaged bonded structure can be either mechanical or adhesively bonded. Mechanical repairs are metallic doublers on one or both sides of a damaged component, held on by fasteners. The fasteners transfer the load through the doubler around the damaged site and restore part functionality. Although common for metal-to-metal bonded structure, mechanical repair of sandwich structure is rare because of the risk of further delamination. Unless the doubler and fasteners are perfectly sealed, water can travel into the honeycomb core eventually causing freeze-thaw damage and delamination. [Pg.1170]

Labor cost in a structure is directly related to part count. If part count can be reduced, then labor costs (and inventory costs) wili decrease. Composite structures are generally composed of many fewer parts than are metal structures. Integral part design and fabrication techniques reduce fastener count and bonding operations.
