One of the ways to increase the bearing strength of a joint is to use metal inserts as in the shimmed joint of Figure 7-40. Another way is to thicken a section of the composite laminate as in the reinforced-edge joint in Figure 7-40.

TWo additional observations can be made. First, because a rigid pipe transmits almost all the load of the earth cover to the trench bed, someone will occasionally be heard to say that rigid pipe, such as concrete pipe, does not require side support. This is not true. Second, because of the difference in the ways rigid and flexible conduit distribute the load of their earth cover, flexible piping materials are often said to require less bedding bearing strength, because they impose less of a load...

For high, heavy tanks, a foundation ring may be needed. Prestressed concrete tanks are sufficiently heavy to require foundation rings. Foundations must extend below the frost line. Some tanks that are not flat-bottomed may also be supported by soil if it is suitably graded and drained. When soil does not have adequate bearing strength, it may be excavated and backfilled with a suitable soil, or piles capped with a concrete mat may be required. 

Stabihzation processes chemically convert the contaminants into their least soluble form so that they do not dissolve in groundwater and, hence, are not dispersible. In addition, these processes may convert the contaminants into a nontoxic form so that they do not contaminate soil and air. By converting a powder into a monolithic solid of high structural integrity, solidification eliminates free liquid, increases load-bearing strength, and decreases the surface area of the waste materials that will come in contact with groundwater or soil. 

Construction started in March 1982 with site clearing and grading. Civil work continued for about a year. The nature of the soil which has a low bearing strength resulted in extensive use of piling under equipment foundations. A total of 7000 piles were installed. Equipment installation was started in 1983 the first preassemblies arrived at the jobsite in August 1983 The last in February 1984. The plant was mechanically complete,ready for start-up in July 1985,and was turned over to the New Zealand Synthetic Fuels Corporation. The plant was on stream and operational by the end of 1985. 

The area of Taranaki surrounding Mt. Egmont is overlaid by volcanic ash which does not provide good bearing strength for equipment foundations. As a result all major foundtations are supported by piles, a total of approximately 7000 being installed.
