Family Pressure

Social and family pressure has a role in motivating individuals, but most people sense that peer groups are the prime movers in the workplace motivational arena thus, to motivate an individual who is under the influence of peers, one must spend time trying to change the peer group behavior. This is the only way to achieve the motivation of an individual within that group. [Pg.59]

The following is an example of how family pressure can be used as a positive reinforcement or motivator. In this particular situation, the woikers in a company were told that if they woiked safely at their jobsite they would accumulate points, which could be used to purchase items from their company catalog. These items could be purchased for either themselves or their family members. One woiker said his son reminded him daily to work safely. He did this because his father had promised him a bicycle when he accumulated enough points. The father was extra cautious at work because he had made this promise to his son and did not want to let him down. He said this had been a true incentive for him and had motivated him to work safely. Therefore, as you can see by this example, there are times when family pressure can also be a true motivator. [Pg.59]

Family pressures to be thin can play an important role, as can peer pressure. However, such influences probably only lead to an eating disorder in those who are vulnerable on other grounds. Traumatic experiences in childhood, such as being sexually abused, are commonly recounted in the developmental histories of patients who subsequently develop anorexia. But, as most women with a history of sexual abuse do not become anorectic, such experiences cannot be considered to be specific risk factors. They probably act by reducing self-esteem. [Pg.46]

Laminated Strand Products. The most recent developments in the family of wood-based composites are a group of laminated strand products, made with strands oriented in the long direction of the product and marketed as stmctural composite lumber. One product is made with long, narrow strips of softwood veneer. The strips or strands are about 2.5 x 13 x 600 mm (0.1 x 0.5 x 24 in.), coated with a PRE adhesive, and pressed under heat and pressure into large blocks. Storage as Hydrides. The discovery of metal compounds that reversibly absorb hydrogen is relatively recent. In the 1970s, the AB and AB family of alloys, which reversibly absorb hydrogen at room temperature and low pressure, were identified (205). Both A and B are metals.
