If this interpretation is correct, then subjects should discriminate between the odors of brothers from another family that were raised with the subjects. In a third experiment we tested this prediction. Subjects were raised from 7—28 days of age with some of their own brothers and some brothers from another family (subjects foster siblings). As adults these males were tested for discrimination between the flank odors of their foster siblings we found that they did discriminate, shown by an increase in investigation to the flank odor of foster sib 2 after habituation to that of foster sib 1 (Figure 1C, comparison between the last habituation trial and the first test trial). In the second test trial, subjects again increased their investigation when presented with the flank secretion of a male that was not related to the foster brothers (or to the subject), indicating discrimination between the odors of foster brothers and the odors of an unrelated, unfamiliar individual. 

To obtain vital information about the safety and efficacy of gene transfer, subjects should be informed that at the time of death, no matter what the cause, permission for an autopsy will be requested of their families. Subjects should be asked to advise their families of the request and of its scientific and medical importance. 

The use of sensitizing dyes in photography has been the subject of many studies and constitutes. still now. one of the most studied areas in specialized periodic publications (125, 126) or in textbooks (88. 127). It can be ascertained that one hundred years after Vogel s discovery of spectral sensitization, the basic mechanisms of action of dyes on their silver halide support still remain not fully understood. However, the theoretical reasons explaining why among many other dye families practically only cyanine methine dyes appear to be spectral sensitizers (128) are better known. 

Soft-wheat flours are sold for general family use, as biscuit or cake flours, and for the commercial production of crackers, pretzels, cakes, cookies, and pastry. The protein in soft wheat flour mns from 7 to 10%. There are differences in appearance, texture, and absorption capacity between hard- and soft-wheat flour subjected to the same milling procedures. Hard-wheat flour falls into separate particles if shaken in the hand whereas, soft-wheat flour tends to clump and hold its shape if pressed together. Hard-wheat flour feels slightly coarse and granular when mbbed between the fingers soft-wheat flour feels soft and smooth. Hard-wheat flour absorbs more Hquid than does soft-wheat flour. Consequently, many recipes recommend a variable measure of either flour or Hquid to achieve a desired consistency. 

Standards have been a part of technology since building began, both at a scale that exceeded the capabiUties of an individual, and for a market other than the immediate family. Standardization minimizes disadvantageous diversity, assures acceptabiUty of products, and faciUtates technical communication. There are many attributes of materials that are subject to standardization, eg, composition, physical properties, dimensions, finish, and processing. Implicit to the realization of standards is the availabiUty of test methods and appropriate caUbration techniques. Apart from physical or artifactual standards, written or paper standards also must be considered, ie, their generation, promulgation, and interrelationships. 

Acrylic Polymers. Although considerable information on the plasticization of acryUc resins is scattered throughout journal and patent hterature, the subject is compHcated by the fact that acryUc resins constitute a large family of polymers rather than a single polymeric species. An infinite variation in physical properties may be obtained through copolymerization of two or more acryUc monomers selected from the available esters of acryUc and methacryhc acid (30) (see Acrylic esterpolya rs Methacrylic acid and derivatives). 

ARALL laminates, a family of hybrid composites consisting of aramid fibers bonded with epoxy between 0.3 mm thick aircraft ahoy sheets, were introduced in the 1980s (53). The laminates have lower density than even the new Al—Li ahoys and are greatly superior to monolithic aluminum sheet in resisting the growth of fatigue cracks. ARALL laminates have been specified for aircraft stmcture which is subjected to cycHc tension loads (see Laminates). 

Metals in the platinum family are recognized for their ability to promote combustion at lowtemperatures. Other catalysts include various oxides of copper, chromium, vanadium, nickel, and cobalt. These catalysts are subject to poisoning, particularly from halogens, halogen and sulfur compounds, zinc, arsenic, lead, mercury, and particulates. It is therefore important that catalyst surfaces be clean and active to ensure optimum performance. 

Cytochrome P450 enzymes have been the subject of a number of recent reviews in which their mechanism and scope of action are covered in much detail [1, 6, 10, 11]. The reader is referred to these articles for a more thorough account of the mechanism and reactivity of cytochrome P450 enzymes, while we present a few representative examples of cytochrome P450-catalyzed epoxidation below. The enzymes we chose are all involved in the biosynthesis of polyketide natural products. Polyketides are a large, structurally diverse family of compounds and have provided a wealth of therapeutically useful drugs and drug leads. 

Electrode materials with a spinel-type structure, A[B2]X4, have become the subject of intensive research over the past 10 years. When the patient is an outpatient, the nurse observes the patient for a response to therapy at the time of each clinic visit. In some instances, the nurse may question the patient or a family member about die response to therapy. The type of questions asked depends on the patient and die diagnosis and may include questions such as How are you feeling, Do you seem to be less nervous, or Would you like to tell me how everything is going Many times the nurse may need to rephrase questions or direct the conversation toward other subjects until these patients feel comfortable and are able to discuss their dierapy.

The route from kinetic data to reaction mechanism entails several steps. The first step is to convert the concentration-time measurements to a differential rate equation that gives the rate as a function of one or more concentrations. Chapters 2 through 4 have dealt with this aspect of the problem. Once the concentration dependences are defined, one interprets the rate law to reveal the family of reactions that constitute the reaction scheme. This is the subject of this chapter. Finally, one seeks a chemical interpretation of the steps in the scheme, to understand each contributing step in as much detail as possible. The effects of the solvent and other constituents (Chapter 9) the effects of substituents, isotopic substitution, and others (Chapter 10) and the effects of pressure and temperature (Chapter 7) all aid in the resolution. 

The family of serine proteases has been subjected to intensive studies of site-directed mutagenesis. These experiments provide unique information about the contributions of individual amino acids to kcat and KM. Mental disturbances have been reported after organophosphate exposure. Neuropsychiatric symptoms occurred in two aerial applicators, one of whom used methyl parathion as well as other insecticides.
