Synthesis. Exploratory research has produced a wide variety of odorants based on natural stmctures, chemicals analogous to naturals, and synthetic materials derived from available raw materials and economical processing. As in most areas of the chemical industry, the search for new and useful substances is made difficult by the many materials that have been patented and successfully commercialized (4). In the search for new aroma chemicals, many new materials are prepared for screening each year. Chemists who perform this work are involved in a creative exercise that takes its direction from the commercial sector in terms of desirable odor types and specific performance needs. Because of economic limitations, considerations of raw material costs and available processing methods may play a role eady in the exploratory work. [Pg.84]

A bold step by universities is needed if their chemical engineering departments are (1) to help the United States achieve the preeminent position of leadership in new technologies and (2) to keep the highly successful U.S. chemical processing industries at the forefront of world markets for established technologies. The universities should conduct a one-time expansion of their chemical engineering departments over the next 5 years, exercising a preference for new faculty capable of research at interdisciplinary frontiers. [Pg.19]

The experiments with optically active 1-propylene oxide have established clearly the need to control the polymer symmetry if crystalline products are to be obtained from monomers which contain or can yield an asymmetric centre. It follows that the main object of research in this field is to discover the manner in which certain catalysts exercise this control. One approach has been to examine a wide variety of reagents for catalytic activity in the hope that structural relationships between... [Pg.44]

Diabetes is a disease when islets of Langerhans cells in the pancreas do not produce, or poorly produce, insulin or the body does not properly use the insulin present in the system. Insulin is a hormone which mobilizes sugar and starches to get the bloodstream to get converted into energy which is needed for the daily activity of the body. The cause of diabetes is still a mystery to the research world. Although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity, food habit, or lack of exercise appears to play an important role, still the underling mechanism remains unclear. [Pg.313]

Several studies have demonstrated that creatine may improve muscle function and increase exercise capacity in older adults experiencing age-related strength and exercise capacity loss. As of early 2002, only a handful of clinical studies had explored this phenomenon, and further research is needed to confirm and explain this finding. It should be noted, however, that there is some research that suggests creatine may not be as effective in older users as it is in younger individuals. [Pg.121]

Finally, creatine supplements may be useful in the treatment of heart problems. Creatine has improved exercise capacity in patients suffering from congestive heart failure, and lowered blood cholesterol in animal studies. Limited study of creatine s effect on blood cholesterol levels in healthy humans has had mixed results, with one study reporting a positive impact and another reporting no effect at all. Further research is needed to determine if creatine is beneficial in improving blood cholesterol and preventing atherosclerosis. [Pg.121]

Mead is a traditional alcoholic beverage obtained by fermenting mead wort that contains 8-18% (v/v) ethanol. Its production has been known since ancient times. However, mead fermentation and maturation requires an extended period, often lasting several months to years. Mead still remains a relatively empirical and manual exercise, requiring large capacity vessels and the investment of considerable capital in terms of the raw material. In addition, the fermentation rate depends on several factors, such as honey variety, yeast strain, yeast nutrition, and pH. Due to the lack of scientific investigation, mead production has suffered in comparison with other alcoholic beverages and so more research is needed to optimize the production process. [Pg.102]

Pharmacology and medicinal chemistry have been transformed from an intellectual exercise in diagnosis to a powerful force for the relief of human disease. Drug discovery is a challenging area of research, and there is a great need for new chemical entities as we do not have cures for many diseases or syndromes. [Pg.268]

These Issues and associated topics are discussed in more detail in the following chapters. Each of the Individual authors has provided background information and research data in an effort to review and evaluate the important issues. Finally, each author has provided a summary statement defining the nutrient needs during an aerobic exercise program. [Pg.5]
