Our spirits may be altered, modified and moved by the influences of superior bodies, therefore, Worsley states, they must be the only principle of energy, power, force and life, in all bodies wherein they are, and the immediate causes through which all alteration comes to the bodies themselves. In the... [Pg.55]

Our Arcanum (because it is a spiritual, homogeneous substance) enters into imperfect metals of this sort per minima, and what it finds like itself, it seizes and defends from the violence of the burning fire by means of its own powerful force, and it preserves it with its own more than perfect fixity, while Vulcan destroys the combustible with its burning flame. And once the combustible is consumed by the fire, there remains pure gold or silver. ... [Pg.165]

The next point of interest has to do with the question of how deep the surface region or region of appreciably unbalanced forces is. This depends primarily on the range of intermolecular forces and, except where ions are involved, the principal force between molecules is of the so-called van der Waals type (see Section VI-1). This type of force decreases with about the seventh power of the intermolecular distance and, consequently, it is only the first shell or two of nearest neighbors whose interaction with a given molecule is of importance. In other words, a molecule experiences essentially symmetrical forces once it is a few molecular diameters away from the surface, and the thickness of the surface region is of this order of magnitude (see Ref. 23, for example). (Certain aspects of this conclusion need modification and are discussed in Sections X-6C and XVII-5.)... [Pg.56]

The radius R also applies to the entire fluid sample. Since torque equals the product of force and R, canceling out one power of R leaves the shearing force acting on the fluid on the left-hand side of Eq. (2.7). [Pg.82]

Inductor. The channel inductor assembly consists of a steel box or case that contains the inductor refractory and the inductor core and coil assembly. The channel is formed within the refractory. Inductor power ratings range from 25 kilowatts for low temperature metals to 5000 kilowatts for molten iron. Forced air is used to cool the lower power inductors, and water is generally used to cool inductors rated 500 kilowatts or more. [Pg.131]

Another problem, prevalent ia areas where severe icing conditions are met, is referred to as galloping of power lines. When ice forms on a power line, there is frequently a prevailing wiad which causes the ice to take a teardrop or airfoil shape. This foil provides an aerodynamic lift to the conductors and under certain conditions the conductors can go iato a resonant vibration such that large standing waves are created that exert enormous forces on the system. Miles of power lines and the towers along them have been destroyed by this phenomenon. [Pg.465]

Forced and Induced Draft The forced-draft unit, which is illustrated in Fig. 11-43 pushes air across the finnedtube surface. The fans are located oelow the tube bundles. The induced-draft design has the fan above the bundle, and the air is pulled across the finned tube surface. In theoiy, a primaiy advantage of the forced-draft unit is that less power is required. This is true when the air-temperature rise exceeds 30°C (54°F). [Pg.1077]

Resonant vibration. Any of the forced vibration loads, such as cyclic or misalignment loads, may have a frequency that coincides with a natural frequency of the rotating-shaft system, or any component of the complete power plant and its foundation, and may, thus, excite vibration resonance. [Pg.607]

The disadvantage of the quasi-resonant converter compared to the newer lossless snubber and active clamp techniques in addition to the basic PWM converters, is the voltage or current stresses placed upon the power components. The peak voltage or current values that exist within quasi-resonant converters can be two to three times higher than in PWM converters. This forces the designer to use higher-rated power switches and rectifiers which may not have as good conduction characteristics. [Pg.151]

Overall, the AFM is a powerful tool that can provide very high force and spatial resolution measurements of adhesion and mechanical properties. The reader is... [Pg.204]

State intervention in man s activities to protect the health of the inhabitants goes back to prehistory. The motivation may not have been altogether altruistic the king acted to protect his subjects because he regarded them as his property. Public health protection began for disease control. With industrialization, came the need for control of even more hazardous forces and substances. This extended protection became technological in accident analysis and response. Present efforts in controlling risk, such as from nuclear power, are a continuation of this development. [Pg.1]

A second disadvantage is the need to have substantial amounts of power conditioning on the vehicle. This equipment must be sized to match the highest force and speed for the entire system, even if it rarely needs such high peak power. If the air gap is large this power conditioning equipment can be heavy and expensive. [Pg.738]
