Between 1900 and 1950, gastric cancer was one of the major types of cancer in the United States. Its incidence and mortality have decreased sharply since 1950 (41), and the concepts presented in this paper account for this decline. In other parts of the world, including Japan, the mountainous interior regions of Central and Western Latin America, and in Northern and Eastern Europe, as well as in Iceland, gastric cancer remains one of the major cancers. There is a North-South gradient, or South-North in the Southern hemisphere, with greater incidence in more frigid zones. [Pg.308]

Mexico, all the year round in parts of China and Brazil and in the equatorial highlands of South America (e.g., Ecuador and Colombia) and East Africa (e.g., Kenya and Uganda), as a winter crop in the lowland subtropics (e.g., northern India and southern China), as spring and autumn crops in the Mediterranean (e.g.. North Africa), and in summer in the lowland temperate regions of the world (North America, western and eastern Europe, northern China and Australia and New Zealand). [Pg.4]

An oxygen pipeline system was established in western Europe in the Iate-1970s that is 592 miles (956 kilometers) long. The Eastern Network of this system serves 30 consumers in France, Luxembourg, and West Germany the Northern Network serves some 40 additional users in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. [Pg.1189]

Another major smoke episode occurred in Northern Europe in late April and in early May 2006. At that period there was a large number of fires in the Baltic countries, Western Russia, Belarus, and the Ukraine. Compared to the spring 2002 when the smoke episode was observed in Finland already in the middle of March (Table 1 [12]), in 2006 there was a lot of snow on the ground in Eastern Europe until the end of March. Therefore, the farmers had to wait with the burning for the unusually late snow melt, causing high frequency of fires at the end of April and beginning of May. [Pg.105]

Red Raspberry is a production crop grown throughout the world, and the total worldwide annual production is typically around 250,000 metric tons (http //www.oregon-berries.com). The majority of commercial raspberries are grown in Eastern Europe, followed by Northern and Western Europe, the United States, and Chile. Like black raspberries, red raspberries are also grown in the Northwest region of the United States, and total production in the years 2002 and 2003 was 42.2 metric tons (MT) and 38 MT, respectively (http // www.nass.usda.gov/or/berries03. pdQ. [Pg.1594]

The most important European subspecies are the western house mouse Mus musculus domesticus), found in northwestern Europe, and the northern house mouse Mus musculus musculus), found in eastern, northeastern, and southeastern Europe. While these subspecies of house mice originated in Europe, they quickly spread as Europeans moved to other parts of the globe. The western house mouse lives almost exclusively in houses or other manmade structures, while the northern house mouse spends part of the year outside. Both subspecies are descended from wild subspecies. [Pg.328]

Analyses of road safety statistics show that developing Asian and African countries perform much worse than European countries just as Eastern and Central European countries fall behind the countries of Western and Northern Europe. As we know from research (van Beeck et al., 2000 Kopits Cropper, 2003 Anbarci et al., 2006 Bishai et al., 2006 Koren Borsos, 2006 Koomstra, 2007/1 Elvik, 2010 Law et al., 2011, Papadimitriou et al., 2013, Yannis et al., 2014) road safety largely depends on the country s social and economic development and the mobility of its population, but there are other equally important factors. [Pg.101]
